So, I thought I had a kidney infection b/c I have all the symptoms...can't pee, then it hurts to pee, funky odor, back pain and now grion pain, plus I've been really tired all week long. Last week went into doc and had a small bladder infection, took Cipro for 3days and felt good while on it. Once I stopped though, the pain came right back. Had a UA ran and just a little protein showed up, but not enough to amount to anything. Is it possible that I could have the beginnings of a kidney infection and its just bothering me more b/c of the IC? Any Ideas????

That could be it. Dont you usually have to take the antibiotics for longer than 3 days, even if you feel better? I also know that for some people, the infection just doesnt respond to antibiotics. It sucks but it does happen. I would call your doctor right away.
Sending BIG hugs!
SarahCurrent meds; , effexor 37.5 mg 2 times a day, and lyrica 100 mg 3 times a day, lots of reading and snuggling with the pets

Hi,
I'm curious as well why you didn't take the antibiotics for longer? You can set yourself up for a super infection if you don't take them long enough to kill off all the bacteria.Comment

I agree with them, Why only 3 days?...
But anyways I am sending you bigs ((((((((((hugss)))))))))) sorry you are feeling so bad..Hugs

Some doctors only prescribe a 3 day course for a UTI, although with IC I think a lot of them prescribe a much longer course. Sometimes the anti-inflammatory properties of the antibiotics can help our discomfort - even if there isn't an infection.
Another possibility is that the in office test your doc used didn't show the infection while a culture might have. I have had a couple of dipstick tests that didn't show anything, but it was sent off for culture and lo and behold I had one.
Did your doctor do a dip or look at it under the microscope? And did he send it off for a culture as well?
Sometimes the discomfort and all that is just the IC.Kim
Diagnosed August 2001
Current IC meds: Elmiron (since 2001), Levaquin (one pill after intercourse to prevent UTIs), Effexor (for depression & anxiety)
Past IC meds: Amitriptyline (Elavil), Hydroxyzine (Vistaril), Detrol LA, Lexapro (for depression & anxiety, but also helped my IC) (They all helped, but I was able to discontinue them.)
I've been virtually symptom free and able to eat & drink whatever I'd like for about 8 years now.

I really don't know why she only prescribed 3days. She didn't see much of an infection on the dip so maybe thats why? She did send this second one to be cultured and checked for blood, protein, white cells, etc., and found nothing, or not enough to worry about I guess. She's not my uro, but she's been my primary for life so she knows my history. Just waiting for Tuesday now, something is definetly wrong! I know it isn't a flare this time.Comment

My guess on the 3 day thing is that that's how long it takes to culture a good reading on whether or not you have a true infection and they can use that culture to see which AB works best to kill that strain of bacteria.
Meme could yoyu try OTC benedryl? You migh be feeling better from the AB's because some have properties that make anti-infammatory....if that's the case the Benedryl would also act the same way...and you might get some sleep too (the active ingredient: diphenhydramine--its also the main ingredient in OTC sleep meds like Unisom...but much cheaper!)And if it does work you might be able to get an Rx for Atarax (similar antihistamine)
Good Luck and Hugs, hopefully you'll find some releif soon.
