Pain med withdrawals??? Please HELP

    Pain med withdrawals??? Please HELP

    Have any of you had withdrawals from MS Contin (morphine sulphate)??? Yesterday, I brought the wrong pill case to work. I had to go home sick. I had the worst migraine headache of my life, sweating, terrible nasea (I couldn't eat anything), and I could hardly move. I couldn't even get out of bed to open the windows or get some ice. Could this be caused by missing a does of 30mg MS Contin along with a STRESSFUL day?? I was about to go to the ER, but no one was around to take me! I seriously need help. That pain was worse that I've ever experienced. I tried to sleep it off and woke up just as bad 2 times.
    Today, I'm better, but I'm worried about what caused it. Does this sound like a migraine or withdrawals from the meds? I haven't spoken with a doctor yet. I think he won't know. I get so much help and support from you.

    I honestly think you need to talk with your doctor. I do know it's not a good idea to miss doses of pain meds if you're accustomed to them so that could be the problem. I hope you took your dose as soon as you got home.

      Hi, Did you feel better when you took a dose of medicine? I am not sure how long you have been on the pain meds but it could be withdrawal, however should have been eliminated when you took them. If this is not the case, I agree that you should see your doctor. Good Luck--Malone

        High probability...

        that what you were experiencing was withdrawal. I, too, forgot to take my nighttime dose of MS Contin. As I recall, I woke up around 3 in the morning feeling like I'd been run over by a truck. As soon as I took the tablet (20 min. or so), the extreme aches and pains (terrible headache) went away. It made me realize how strong the medication is and I have these worried weird thoughts like....what if I had to drive across town and my car broke down and my cell phone didn't work....to say....I would be in major pain if I didn't have regular doses! Don't like to think of it! A couple of years ago, I had tried the Fentanyl patches for about 2 1/2 weeks, but decided I didn't like the negative side effects. Stupidly, I decided to stop taking it without telling my pain mgt. doctor. I expected I would have a 'headache', but it was terrible. It took 3 days of feeling like I had the worst case of the flu before I felt any better. When I went to my doctor, she said "You were supposed to let me know!! I would have given you something to help you transition into something else!...There was no need for you to go through those terrible withdrawals". Duh...I felt sooo stupid. I realized how strong these meds really are! Anyway,...yes, from what you described with the aching and terrible headache (even missing one dose) sounds like the withdrawal effect. My new doctor told me the MS Contin only lasts in the body for about 6 hours at the most. I hope you are feeling better now!

        -Bladder surgery to correct reflux-'68
        -Terribly painful periods, [email protected] 13 (most likely due to endometriosis, no dx then)
        -4 gyn surgeries since 2003 to remove cysts, ovaries, endometriosis and uterus
        -DX'd w/I.C. before 3rd gyn surgery, but sure I've had it since childhood
        -Gastrointestinal allergies to nuts and shellfish - {I would like to know if there is some connection of gastro allergies to I.C.?}
        PTSD (sexual abuse by teenage boy when I was 4 and s. abuse by adult male who was friend of my Dad's - my parents still don't know)
        -DX'd with IBS in 2000
        -Rhabdomyolysis in 2001 (has not returned)
        -DX'd with Eosinophilic Esophagitis (Asthma of the Esophagus) 3/07
        -DX'd with TMJ in 2000-wear splint
        -Hydrodistention and Cystoscopy w/ biopsy of tissue in bladder-2003
        -DX'd with Epilepsy -2000
        -SSS (Selective Sound Sensitivity)-wear earplugs most of the time to screen out certain noises
        -DX'd with Fibromyalgia (2006)

        Medications:MS [email protected],Hydrocodone-10/650:up to 4day,Levothyroxine,Soma,Clonazepam,Vesicare,Keppra (anti-seizure),Flovent FHA 220mcg (swallowed for E.E.),Elmiron,Instillations-5+per week for flares,Lidocaine,Cysta-Q,Prelief, Dulcolax,Baby Aspirin(for FM),God blessed me w/2 boys: Devin-14 and Logan-9, Jim, my husband of 18+ years who sort of understands what I.C. is...still working on educating him!, my springer spaniel "Wookie" ('cause he makes sounds like 'Chewbacca' from "Star Wars" when my son plays with him) and the most important 'medicine' of all...PRAYER...because ONLY God knows the answer to why we are all going through this awful I.C.!

          Withdrawls,,,,,

          Hi I am on the Fentenyl patches,50mg and oxyirevery six hours and I am in a great deal of discomfort. I was wondering yesterday if I may be too use to the patches now and need it up again. I go to the DR. in two days, I was to go last week but I was sick with flu like symptoms for three days and now even I feel sick in the stomach and headache. I went thru withdrawl when I had the morphine pump and they never caught it until a month later, I kept saying to my family doctor how could I have the flu so long. I am so pressured to take more oxyir than told to, but I don;t want to do anything stupid and put myself at risk.

            Talk with doctor soon...

            to make sure you aren't going through flu on top of the regular pain you experience with I.C., etc.. He/she will be able to give you a professional dx. It does, however sound like you're having trouble with the medication. Even a slight withdrawal from the Fentanyl will mimic the symptoms of a terrible bout with the flu, i.e., body aches and pains, terrible headaches, nausea, sweating, diarhhea (sp?), etc.. As I had posted before, when I decided to stop taking the Fentanyl 'cold-turkey', I just thought I had a terrible flu, although I never had a fever. It can be confusing. Those withdrawals are terrible. It may be as you mentioned...you are needing probably needing more pain relief and you're body is telling you so. I recently increased my breakthrough Lortab from the 7.5/500's to the 10/650's. I had a headache and some nausea for a day and a half. My nurse told me, even though it seems strange, my body was probably going through a withdrawal from the 7.5's and even though I had been changed to a higher dosage, it was from a different manufacturer, etc.. Makes sense to me, 'cause now I'm fine. Anyway, most importantly, get checked out by your doctor. I hope you feel better soon!

              Pain med withdrawals

              Thanks DaniBelle for your words of encouragement that I am not imagining this or have the flu, I took my temp several times and it was ok. I have stopped eating because I am scared I will throw up and I have to go to my Dr on Monday (A 2 hr. drive) I sure hope he can help me.

                Withdrawl

                It sounds like you had some withdrawl. I hope your Doctor can shed some light on what happened and what you should do next time something like that happens. You can always call a doctor on call if something like that happens again or 911. I have a close friend who is on a similar pain medication and she can't even miss a few hours of her dose or she goes into massive withdrawl.

                I was on the Fentanyl Patch for 3 years. I had to change my patches every
                48 hours instead of every 72 because I went through withdrawl too fast. When my Husband and I decided to try to get pregnant, I slowly decreased with my Pain Doctor's supervision. I went from 150 mcg to 100 to 75 to 50 to 25 to 12.5 mcg. I did this over several months. It took me 3 months after I went off of the 12.5 mcg to go through the withdrawl process. I worked with my primary care doctor as well and had to take Vicoden for 3 months to end the withdrawl process. I had a rough time. I may have to go back onto it as I can not tolerate any other pain medications. I am hoping that it's made a little differently now. The flu didn't even half describe what it was like.

                  Try to eat....

                  something bland, i.e., rice, dry toast, noodles w/nothing on it (just a little margarine), a micro potato, etc.., but most of all make sure you don't get dehydrated. I've often made that mistake....so afraid to eat anything and end up not drinking anything much as well. The fact that you have no temperature is a good indication it's a medication/withdrawal situation. When I was going through what I thought was a BAD case of the flu (terrible migrane for almost 3 days), I thought it was odd that I never had a bit of temperature. As I said in my previous post, when I went to my pain mgt. doc, she said "You didn't have to go through that...you're supposed to tell me if there's a problem with a medication, you want to change or it's making you feel bad...I would have given you something to transition out of the Fentanyl and onto something else without even a headache". I was mad at myself to say the least. As Kara29 was saying about a friend of hers, even going a couple of hours past your regular dose can put you into a withdrawal situation. It makes you realize how powerful our pain medications are. I'm even thinking that I should probably keep a few doses in my purse (in a inconspicuous place) and some in my car...just in case. A couple of months ago, I was stuck at the ER for about 3 hours more than I thought I'd have to be there. I realized I was 2 hours past taking my pain med. and had none with me. I started to feel that 'run over by a truck feeling creeping in' and luckily, they got done and I was home before I was hurting too much. Anyway, I hope you find out for sure what is going on at your doctor's appt. and that you are pain-free very soon.

                  Have a nice evening. Even though it may sting and hurt at first...a warm bath will help...it's the getting in that's the hard part...esp. when you have a raging headache and your body feels so bad. Forgot to ask, is your skin really sensitive to touch? When you put your hands in water, warm or cold, does it hurt? That's a withdrawal side effect. I'm not a medical person, but just telling of my experiences. If you have any more questions, ICDonna (ICNDonna?) is really helpful and very kind.

                    Pain med withdrawals

                    Thanks for all the advise and help, and just to answer your question, yes it does hurt when washing my hands, at first I thought it was from the cold water, but the warm did the same thing. I folled your advise and ate some dry toast and drank Gatorade. I eat very little because I get that nawing feeling like it is coming up. I am taking a 3 lb. coffee can with me tomorrow when I take the 2 hour trip to the doctor. Pray he gives me something to take or up's the medicine. I will be so glad when they put the other implanted pump in.

                      Pain med withdrawals

                      Hi, I got good news, I am getting the new pump May 23, and the doctor said I can up the oral medication, it sure makes a difference when you feel good and when you hurt all the time. He said just don't eat them like candy and I said no I don't I try to take as little as possible, then I get to hurting so bad and cannot get it under control. So I take 2 pills at night and in the morning and then take only one during early evening and two around noon. Depending what I am doing and where I am if I have acess to them or not. I started to carry them in my purse so they are handy. The patches I do every other day, that is just the 50mg. patches.

                        Pump

                        Sue,

                        It does make a difference in how everyday life goes if our pain is under control. My pain never goes away and the my doctor is trying to decide whether to do another lap. to check if more endo. is back. Just curious, is the pump you're referring to, a pump which administers pain medication? The only pump I can think of are the ones they have hooked up to an I.V. for post-op pain. What is the pump you're getting put in?

                          Pain Pump

                          Dani ,the pump I am referring to is made by Medtronics. www.medtronics.com-You can go there and find out just how it works. Mine was placed just under the skin on my left side right above the hip bone, it has a catheter attached to it that goes around to you spine and connects on the nerve that leads to the bladder, there the medication is programed to go out every hour or sooner and in the pump is your medication (like morphine and bupivicane). Then every 2 to 21/2 months you go to the doctors to have it filled, they fill it with a syringe that is your kind of medicine, it should have your name on and they check things really good like they ask you to state your name and where you live and what is in your pump. After filling the pump you get a read out sheet saying how much they put in and the kind of meds they used. I had one before for six years and it was great. The only time I took oral medication was when I had break thru pain. Go to the Medtronics web site they are very nice and you can call then 24/7 and ask them anything. After you have the pump in you must get one of them idenfication necklace or braclet to let someone know you have a implant and what you are allergic to. It is a medical braclet. I got the necklace, but had to take the chain part off and use like thin black elastic because I was allergic to the nickle in the chain.
