    travel and IC

    hello.

    have a few questions. dh and i will be traveling to europe next month. for the past 6 months, i've been able to stay off all bladder meds (except for 1 or 2 flares) and control this stupid stuff with diet (prelief has helped a lot). but when we get to europe, my plan is to eat and drink everything in sight. lol.

    my ob/gyn is giving me some urelle to take with me. is that going to be enough? what do i do if it's not and i end up having a flare while i'm overseas? the only thing dh and i know to do is pack our own toilet paper and plenty of cash for the pay toilets. but i am worried about this trip.

    what else can i do? my uro has given me some elavil, but i never got the rx filled because i didn't really want to take it. if i start it now, would it have time to start working before our trip? should i even consider it? the uro is out on maternity leave, so i'm not able to call her.

    what would y'all do? will urelle and prelief be enough?

    just obsessing before i need to.

    A word of caution!!!!! If you're doing well following the diet, you'll have a much better time if you stick to it on your trip. Also, I suggest drinking bottled water when away from home.

    It would be tragic if you ended up in a miserable flare because of diet. Believe me when I say a little caution with food and drink can make your vacation much more enjoyable.

    I think of my food triggers as being allergies --- after all, they do cause physical problems (pain and frequency) --- that makes it much easier for me to make sensible diet decisions.

      I agree with Donna. I would stay with my diet and drink bottled water.

        okay, then. yet one more question.

        what about mineral water? i've never tried it, but would it cause a flare? i'll try my best to stick to the diet. the fortunate thing for me is a lot of the "bad" foods are foods i don't like anyway. except for fruit. i'm dying here without my fruit.

        so if you know about mineral water, let me know.

          I always buy spring water with no additives when I buy bottled water.

            I would get in touch with my IC doc. and explain everything and see if he would prescribe you something for pain to take with you. I am not into foreign doctors and they probably wouldn't know what IC is anyway!!! Good Luck!

              thanks for the tips.

              tami, i can't call my regular uro because she's out on maternity. but my ob/gyn's wife is a uro, so he usually consults with her on what to do for me. it's like i have a team of docs or something. lol. so far i'm getting an rx for antispasmodics. don't think i should take my b&o supprettes with me though. don't know if it would be okay to go overseas with something that strong.

              i need to go through the foods i can eat and learn how to say them in french. that's the place i'm worried about the most. i don't speak any french (learning how to ask where the toilet is), so i don't know what i'll be eating.

                AS long as you have your meds. in a prescription bottle with your name on them with the correct amount in it you will be safe. If it was me I would definitely take all my meds. It is better to be safe than sorry!!!! Just think of how beautiful Europe is going to be----think of all you will miss having to stay in a hotel room in pain. Call your doctors and explain the situation and I am sure you will get some helpful advice. Hope you have a great trip!!!

                  As long as your medications aren't liquid, you shouldn't have any problem with taking them with you. My son's wife had her liquid medication taken when she entered the US on their way home from Australia --- at least they were on their way home!

                    I would also watch the diet and what you drink close. Let me tell you what happened to me on a trip a year or two ago. We had a long road trip and we had stopped at a buffet to eat breakfast. I had watched what I ate real closely but apparantly the water or an additive to some food got me. Within 30 -60 minutes back on the road I had a horrible flare. I mean vise like pain on my bladder, stopping every 10-15 minutes and not feeling empty as soon as I finished and just toughing it out so we could at least get a few more miles down the road. I was miserable. The pain, urgency and frequency were some of the worst I had had in a long time and then throw in that our means of travel is a diesel pickup, words can't describe it.
