  • Horrible side effects from Lyrica!!!

I was told by a doctor to take Lyrica for my pain. I have to say that it really does work for pain. BUT the side effects I'm having are horrible. My blood pressure while laying down is 72/48. I'm having a hard time walking, my vision is so blurred and at times I have double vision. I HAVE to stop taking it.
I have a few questions...Has anyone every had a bad reaction like this to Lyrica? And if I've only taken it for a week am I going to have withdrawal?
I stuck with it because it helped so much with the pain but I just canny taken the side effects. So I guess it's back to pain.

It takes much more than a week to become dependent on a medication. Have you talked with your doctor about your reaction?

      Katie,

I had some problems with lyrica myself. I felt like I had a hangover headache and I also had the blurred vision. I told my doctor on third day and we agreed to try for another week to see if it resolved itself but it did not. Stopping it after ten days was not an issue.

      Symptoms: started July 2007

New pain medication regimen has things under pretty good control for many weeks now. Exercise and eating healthy along with pain control have given me new life.

Current Symptoms: pain in testicles, penis and general groin area. Other discomfort that is beyond pain, a maddening crazed feeling that defies description. New pain medication has most symptoms under good control.

Frequency and urgency was a problem the first year or so but frequency is normal now.

Diagnosed: Prostatitis first then IC by Cysto/Hydro

Current Meds: Hydroxyzine 25mg 3 x day, Pyridium 200mg 3 x day (off 3-4 days on 3-4 days), Oxycodone, Norvasc (BP).

      Past medications and treatments:
Protatitis and IC diet strict for 6 months, no change. Still watch diet although nothing seems to help or make worse. Have tried reverse, ate lemons to see if worse but no change at all.

Meds tried - Amitriptyline, Detrol, Flomax, Cipro, Doxycycline. many other antibiotics, Uroxatrol, Vicoprofen, Elmiron (6 months at $320 mo nothing), Aloe, Cysprotek, Glucosamine, Marshmallow, various oils, tons more stuff to strange and numerous to recount. Hydrodistension for diagnostic was horrible for two weeks after I was sure I must be going to die because nothing could feel that way and let you live.

        Thank you

No, Donna I haven't talked with my doctor yet. But I will today. And I'm so glad I won't have any problems getting off it.
Mike, the hangover and blurred vision is terrible. But the worst is I have joint pain which makes it hard to walk. Add in the dizziness and I look like a drunk walking thru my house.
I'm quitting as of this morning. How long did it take you to get back to "normal"?

        Thank both so much.

              KatieB,

I notice you're also taking many other things. I wonder if it could be a nasty drug interaction. I would check with your docter. Maybe you could take the Lyrica in place of somehing else since you said it relieved your pain?

                Hi rachael

I thought the same thing so I first checked with my pharmacist and then my pm doc. They said the only increased side effect could be sleepiness/ lethargy.

My Sister took Lyrica due to the the loss, many years ago, of her arm via train/car accident. Much pain followed with nothing to relieve the agony. Finally she took Lyrica. Pain gone. Then every symtoms Katie that you experienced hit her like rock. Just terrible!!!! I was so terrified for her. She went off of it of course. The Doctor finally put her on percocet. She is in her fifties now and he (the Doctor) feels this is the only way to go after trying everything else. After 34 years of pain he does not care if she gets "hooked" Quality of life right now is more important. I hope ypu find help soon. Of course talk with you Doctor. Hugs, Ziggy

When your blood pressure is that low you do not have enough blood circulation flowing to your brain. that is why some people faint or feel light headed with low blood pressure. Please contact your md when you first have these type of symptoms.
current meds- ditropan 5mg xl, neurontin 300 mg. zanaflex for pelvic floor spasms Most meds, IC meds included, cause me bladder pain

previous med- elmiron( nothing after 8 months), atarax ( to sleepy), ditropan ( retention), Cymbalta, cystoprotek( worsened flare) has helped many others, aloe vera ( worsened flare), lyrica( irritated bladder.

                      alternative to Lyrica...

I was on Lyrica and it did not seem to help for pain. I was on it for a few months. Now I am taking Gabapentin. I am not sure if it is helping either but my doctor wants me to stay on it until I see the pain specialist. I don't have any side effects so far...I take 900mg 3xday. My pharmacist says the drugs are both used for neuropathic pain.
                      Interstitial Cystitis: Elmiron and Hydroxyzine
                      Depression/Anxiety: Remeron, Cipralex and Clonazepam

*tried instills for nearly a year, had a break then started again for about 4 months...discontinued due to no improvement and increased flares
                      * 2 hydrodistentions :

                      * currently on "Nabilone" for pain management

                      Taken the following:
Gabapentin no relief but could tolerate it
Lyricano relief but could tolerate it
                      Cymbalta severe depression/anxiety etc.
Topamax severe nausea and weight loss
Oxycodone: I could tolerate if I used it for flares only...not for extended use due to constipation

What helps IC: yoga/meditation are my current treatments along with chiropractic and pelvic physiotherapy and acupuncture

                      Other conditions...
Vulvadynia (amytriptaline cream - no longer using to to irritation)
                      Severe IBS
Chronic Sinus pain (nasal rinse as need)
                      Migraines
Lower back and sacroiliac joint disfunction

                      Allergies: Erythromycin, scents and detergents
