  • help for excruiating pain

so what do you do when you get excruciating pain? ended up in ER last night with pain as bad as passing kidney stones. doc asked me, "have you abused drugs in the past?" what!!!!

i can't end up in the ER every time i have bad pain, this pain hit like a ton of bricks, i couldn't stand, it was bladder, low back, pelvic, i sat in the waiting room for 3 hours sobbing before they saw me, doc sent me home with possible appendix pain, saying to come back if it was worse today but giving me no take home meds

i took demerol twice (i had that at home)after coming home to get on top of the pain, today i was a drugged mess, had to stay in bed all day

i went to ER a month ago when i thought i had a bad bladder infection so i come back in a month and they think i am a drug abuser? grrrrr

been taking tylenol with codeine for my mild to moderate pain, it did nothing for my pain last night

Do you have a family Doctor that knows you well? ER's do not know us and always think we are shopping for pain meds in my opinion. My PCP has known me for over 20 years so he knew when I told him I was in an 8 of pain I was serious. He gave me a prescription for Percocet which I rarely need to take but I'm sure happy to have just in case. A family Doctor can set up test to see if something unusal is going on. Have you been diagnosed with IC? I don't know what to say to help you but you need a real Doctor ASAP. Your post seems like a real nightmare. I am so sorry and I care. Keep us posted. Hugs, Ziggy

I was just going to make the same suggestion. I worked in a major hospital for many years and I understand why ER physicians are reluctant to order pain meds unless they can see a broken bone, etc. --- you would be amazed at the lengths an addict will go to to get pain meds --- and I also learned that addicts can look like anything from a poorly dressed tramp to a nicely groomed grandma.

ERs to me are useles. They see us IC patients as drug seekers, plain & simple. I have been to the ER a number of times & every single doc had no idea what IC was...sigh. I understand that it is your last resort though.
I agree with the other posters, please find a GOOD urologist who can help you get on the proper meds & get your pain under control. Even a regular family doc can help you only if they know what IC is & how to treat it.
        Good luck to you!

I suggest a Pain Management Dr. they deal with people who have chronic pain and they tend to be more understanding and less judgemental, and obviously they prescribe "pain pills" As always, you will have to take them with care and not take too many or take them too often. Good luck. Pain sucks.

Most of us here have had bad ER experiances at one time or another. You are right....they DO look at ICers as just chronic complainers and/or drug seekers. They even have a term for people that go to the ER too often...."frequent flyers". You ought to read some of posts they write about IC patients on some of the nursing forums or Drs forums. It would make you cry! Most of them primarily think we are psych cases.

It is best to get a preventitve plan in place for pain by getting a referral to a pain clinic. Pain Clinics will put you on round the clock pain meds to prevent the pain and get ahead of it, and will also give you something to take several times per day when the pain spikes or increases. They can also do things like nerve blocks and other things. This is your best bet to get help.

It has been my own experiance that ER Drs will usually not give you anything for IC pain, and if they do, it will only be enough to last 2 days (to get to a different Dr. to write long term meds. Most Uros wont r/x daily pain meds either and frankly, most ICers have trouble getting ANY Dr. to r/x them. Lots even refuse to give a referral to a pain clinic, (even though they dont want to r/x them either!) CRAZY! I KNOW! But, there ARE Drs out there who will r/x them, (but usually only if you have a history of several years with them and they know you very well.) And there are Drs who will refer patients to pain clinics. (However most wont do it until they have made you try every non-narcotic option first.) Unfortunately, that's just the way it is. In a way, it is good, b/c it keeps more people off them if they CAN be helped by something non narcotic. But, it also hurts alot of people who are suffering and makes those people that arent helped by anything else suffer longer.

But, yeah, my advice, if you are sure it is an IC attack and not something life-endangering is to stay away from the ER and ask your regular Dr. for to help you with meds or to refer you to a Pain Clinic.

            Good luck!

The meds r/xed by my Pain Dr. from the Pain Clinic are as follows: Morphine ER and IR, Baclofen, and Lyrica and Seroquel (used off-label as a sleeping pill, but it also helps with depression)

(I listed my meds in case someone reading this has been told like so many ICers that Drs dont r/x pain meds for IC.) I want you to know that there ARE tons of us who are also dealing w/this disease and the pain and many of us ARE on pain meds.)

              I agree

I agree that ER's are really useless. I have gone in a couple of times for the pain and I have been given false information...
My question is what is a person to do if there is not a pain clinic in the state that will treat and IC patient.? Where am I supposed to go for the meds....? My PCP is giving some meds but is really not comfortable changing them in any way.

Kirs10, I have to drive out of state to go to my pain Dr. It is 5 hours round trip. (That is if there are no wrecks on the interestate or if I dont schedule an appt during rush hour traffic.) It stinks to drive that far, but there isnt anyone closer who will r/x daily pain meds for chronic pain patients in my area unless you have cancer. As bad as it is to drive that far, I would drive even farther if I had to in order to be able to live my life the rest of the month. I know that nobody wants to drive out of state, but that's what lots of us have to do. I know a few people that even drive 8 hours one way once a month to their pain clinics! We can always change Drs if we find someone closer who will r/x pain meds or if a pain clinic opens up near us. But, until then, I would rather drive one day a month than be in unremitting pain all the rest of the month.

I hope you find a pain Dr near you, but if not, I hope you will consider driving out of state too.
