I would say usually it consists of a discussion and a pelvic exam.

The last time I was sent to a new uro, mine had to close his practice due to illness, I had already been diagnosed with IC and urinary retention, I was escorted into a room and told to strip, it was not a normal examining room, I must have looked a little shocked because the woman said you were told he doing an in office cysto today, I said no, she replied oh they should have told you, but he has ordered this for you.

This was all before I had ever even laid eyes on him, he came in did a pelvis exam and a cysto while talking to me.

I don't mean to scare you but I would call and ask, I would not have cared anyways even if they told me, it's not pleasant but over quick no sense sweating it.

I wonder what he has in store for my next visit in a few weeks?

It's normal to be nervous at any "first" dr's appointments, at my first appt I was asked many questions, gave a urine specimen, was checked by pelvic exam as well, so he would know where my pain was coming from. We decided together that my next step would be the cyso. I was nervous as , but calmed down while speaking to the doctor.

I second what Donna said. When I went for my first appt. they did a urine culture, asked me a bunch of questions, told me to not to have tomatoes, caffeine or soda from then on, and scheduled Urodynamic testing as well as a Cytoscopy. They told me they had a hunch I had IC but couldn't be sure until I had further testing.

I hope the appointment goes well for you. At least it's a step in the right direction in getting a proper diagnosis and treatment.

I suggest you telephone the office and ask what's involved with a first visit. That way you will know --- and it can vary, depending on the doctor.

    Warm hugs,
    Donna

I have been to 2 for this 'first' time. They both consisted of urine samples. The one where he didn't know what he was doing gave me a vaginal and rectal exam (not saying those were given because he didn't know what he was doing). Then he gave Vesicare and Flomax. He refused to give me pain or anxiety meds because, "It can make it worse." *eyeroll* The second with the doctor I love was just talking and scheduling my Cysto. He also perscribed me some new pain meds (I was on Norco from the ER and was having horrid nightmares) and Elmiron and was stopped from taking the Flomax.

    Have appt with Urologist Thurs

It is finally here.. my first appt with urologist on Thursday. I am nervous. I have never been to one yet. I am assuming they probably won't do anything at my first appt right? Just assess me and ask questions?
What things should I ask? Any suggestions on how to go about this appt.
Sidenote: I have not yet been diagnosed by PCP thinks I have it.
Working...
