  • Period Pain

Anybody have any good advice for pain before and during your period? The last few months I have been getting crippling, severe, lay in bed with heating pad pain starting about 4 days before and lasting thru til about 3rd day of period. I am on Nucynta for pain but doesnt seem to help this pain. Its like everything down there hurts so bad. I also use Baclofen and Valium. My doc doesnt want to give me anything else. I ended up going to ER last night for it. They tried a B&O suppository which didnt work. Then morphine which worked pretty good but u cant just go in and ask for morphine a couple times a month. Any ideas?

Are you on any medications that may help your bladder lining heal, like Elmiron or Cystoprotek? I used to have the same issues (not pain as bad as yours, it sounds like), but it lessened when I went on Cystoprotek. PT might help you, if you haven't already tried that. It can be a lifesaver for many, including myself....even if you don't have pelvic floor dysfunction too. Instillaions might be helpful as well.

I went in to urogyn. He wants me to stop having periods. He said with my IC they are just going to keep getting worse and worse. He wants me to try Mirena IUD. I cant take the pill since I am over 35 and smoke. He also suggested a hysterectomy but I dont want that right now. So I will prolly try the Mirena thing.

He didn't order anything for the pain other than what I am already on. He gave me a referral to the pain clinic but I have learned there is an 8 month waiting list. So that doesn't help me right now. Heating pad is my best friend...lol

The Mirena does help the lining of the uterus.

Smoking could very well be increasing your pain. I know when I quit (it's been well over twenty years now) I found it actually reduced my bladder pain. It's something you might want to think about --- believe me, I know how difficult quitting can be, but it's so worth it.

        Sending gentle hugs,

I hope the Mirena works for you! Just wanted to say in case you didn't know: you don't need a prescription for Cystoprotek....I buy mine off Amazon. If you can't get into a pain clinic for that long, it may be worth a shot.

A hysterectomy seems very radical, especially if you haven't tried instillations yet. I'd leave surgery as a last resort.
