  • Bladder/urethra spasms after voiding - can anything help?

For the past week, any time I void for about an hour afterards my bladder and urethra spasm, causing me discomfort (not pain, just that annoying, "it's always there" discomfort). Is there anything over the counter that I could take - would Azo help??

Since I had been in remission for 6 years (and may still be....all of his may still be the lingering results of two UTI's, one very severe 2 1/2 months ago and another that I just finished the antibiotics for last Wednesday) so I haven't really been following the IC diet. Could these be caused by that? I've been drinking some iced tea. I don't notice an "instant" pain in my bladder that I used to feel 6 years ago, so I've assumed that I could keep eating/drinking what I wanted. I guess I should cut back to just water and IC safe stuff and see if that helps, right?

I dread going to the bathroom! It's even worse after I go number 2 because of the pushing.
Diagnosed with IC in 2004 at the age of 19
12 weeks of instillations (don't remember what)
Remission from late 2005 until August 2011.
Married in 2005 - Our son was born in 2008!

IC acting back up after a severe UTI in June followed by another mild UTI in August.

    Current Treatment
~IC diet - not strict, but avoiding most things including my beloved soy chai lattes. Drinking only water and blueberry juice. No tomatoes or anything spicey.
~1/2-1mg Ativan per day - has been the only thing to help! Praying that my doctor will let me continue with it
    ~25mg Doxipen
~Azo as needed (don't really notice a difference)

IC symptoms get progressively worse throughout the day. Sleep and constant distraction are my only refuge!

iced tea really bothers my bladder!! I think it irritates my bladder the most out of any food/drink. Azo worked well for me the other day...
hope this goes away soon and you go back into remission!

Caffeine is the worst for me! It causes spasms for hours! The only iced teas I can drink are herbal ones, I like the Starbucks Passion Iced Tea.

I find that AZO or Pyridium does help with the spasms, too. It's worth a shot! Best of luck.

My suggestion has to be to return to the IC diet --- tea is an especially common trigger.
