External cream for Urethral burning?

Hi all,

Just this week I've been having burning and feelings of irritation in and around my urethra, all since Tuesday when I had an instillation (and put the catheter in myself). I don't think its an infection, and I also did AZO strip test which came back negative for infection. I've had IC for months and this has not been a part of my normal symptoms (Thank God!). I'm really upset that it seems to be getting worse each day and not better, as if the urethral irritation is in a pain loop and just getting more irritated as I keep peeing.

Does anyone use any over-the-counter creams for urethral burning and pain? I'm 27 so I don't think estrogen or hormone creams would be appropriate, but that's all I could find so far that people are using. Any ideas would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Regardless of your age, Estrace Cream can be used at the urethral opening. The Estrogen is readily absorbed in just the area where it is applied. Our bladders are Estrogen dependent to maintain its health. Using an estrogen-based cream may or may not help, but it certainly can't hurt anything to give it a try. Call your doctor's office to ask about giving you a prescription for it.

As an aside, catheters set my urethra on fire, and my IC flares for weeks afterwards.

Thanks for the response Cathy! Maybe I will ask to try that. I just thought since the source of my irritation is related to chaffing from catheterization and not to estrogen deficiency, that it wouldn't be good treatment for me. I was hoping there was some anesthetic cream with lidocaine or something people put on their urethras.

I'm sure that some ICers do use Lidocaine to get some relief from the burning. Perhaps some of them will respond soon. To me the downside to using instillations is the irritation that can occur to the urethra, especially when done on a recurring basis. There are some very tiny catheters, maybe called pediatric catheters, that are less likely to cause irritation. And you are right: if your urethral burning is due just to catherization, the Estrace Cream would not be the answer to quelling that symptom. I hope you find some relief soon.

I was going to say lidocaine, but you'd need a prescription for that. It does help me with that burning feeling you've described.

The only things that help my IC urethra from burning and irritiated is cystoprotek, desert havest aloe vera,prelief with everythings I ate and IC diet.

THought I should update the thread- the burning was definitely from the instillation, and since they flared me up so bad and never provided a discernible benefit, I wasn't really able to continue trying them. But if I could have known then what I know now, I would have definitely asked my doctor for an Rx for lidocaine gel!! I think EVERY woman with IC and PFD should be given an RX for this, especially if she is getting instillations. It's important to keep pain cycles from beginning, because pain around the urethra can cause so much tightening of the muscles of the pelvic floor which just make everything worse. Doctors have a long way to go in respectfully and compassionately treating IC patients with the OBVIOUS medications that would ease their suffering.

Im ladies,
Im new here,but a veteran of IC..Mine, we think is caused by Pudendal nerve issues.
Quick question, due to a major flare I want to try Prelief again, but wondered if its constipating? (as there's calcium in it.)
I am on opiod pain meds for severe anal/rectal pain, thus I try hard to manage the constipation..I took prelief a couple times lately and feel that backed-up feeling today... I doubt its the Pre-lief but wondered.

I have lidocaine ointment USP 5%, as prescribed by my doctor for sit bone pain ...and rectal pain.(It didnt help)
Is this the same thing as lidocaine gel? Would love to have some of that on hand for a burny urethra..
I remember my doc rubbing something on my urethra last year when I had a flare and it numbed it nicely.
It might've been Neo-gyn... but anyway the lidocaine gel sounds better.
Is the gel more effective than the lidocaine ointment I have?

There is a gel, called Miracle II.........it's all natural, but I put in frig and it is the only thing that has helped my urethal burning, I have IC and Uretitis......... Just go to web bar type in Miracle II and look for Miss Daisy's sight. I also buy all the products, there is a kit and I mix the soap and neutralizer for washing the vagina area, NO BURNING AT ALL, plus I drink the Neutralizer and it is helping all.
