  • Hi from Atlanta!

    Hi there!

Newly sort-of diagnosed with IC. Looking for a urologist in Atlanta. Also, is there a support group in Atlanta? I only see the one in Cartersville. I am currently being treated by my OB/GYN but I would like to see a specialist. I have so many questions. I really want someone who is very familiar with IC and is up to date with the latest research and treatments. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!!

Hi! I'm in your situation as well. I was referred to Dr. Shessell at GA Urology. I go on Monday. I saw some negative reviews on him but that he's the IC guy here. Will let you know how it goes.

Thanks! Turns out the nurse practitioner at my OB-GYN office, Atlanta Gynecology and Obstetrics near Dekalb Medical Center trained with a urogynecologist and has a lot of experience with IC patients so I have been seeing her. Still might want to see a urologist at some point though. Definitely let me know what you think.

She recommended I do 9 bladder instillations, 1 per week, of lidocaine/heparin so I have been doing that. Also, she recommended the elimination diet, starting with totally eliminating everything not on the "safe" list for as long as I can and then gradually introducing back one thing at a time to see how I do. Also, she gave me Urelle for pain, and gave me a script for Elmiron which my stupid mail-in pharmacy filled but which I have not decided to take yet. I have been taking Prelief for questionable foods and I got the Desert Harvest aloe vera and have been taking that faithfully.

I have had about 4 of the bladder instillations now. I have to say that this diet feels like one of the worst punishments ever. I have to have hope that one day things will improve to the point that I can start eating some flavorful food again, and be able to go out to eat, or travel and eat. Trying hard not to get totally depressed about it.

Anyway, let me know what that Dr. says and what you think of him. Good luck!!

Since Atlanta is not too far from Greensboro, NC, I thought I would suggest Dr. Robert Evans, who is widely known for his research on IC (considered by many the east coast expert, with Dr. Parsons being the west coast expert in San Diego). I have seen both of these doctors and can say that Robert Evans is truly brilliant and willing to have an open mind and try new, more innovative treatments.
Diagnosed with IC in 2005, since then have been diagnosed with an unspecified autoimmune disease, with inflammation in my bladder, colon, left knee, left ear, left eye, lungs and pericardium. Argh!

My name is La-La and I am new to this forum also I was recently diagnosed with IC , possible Eosinophilic Cystitis. I am seeing a doctor at Midtown Urology in Atlanta. Her name is Dr Jenelle Foote. I live three hours away from there but there are no IC specialists in my area so I travel to see her.

I've been seeing Dr. Martha Boone in Alpharetta on Old Milton Pkwy. The first day I saw her, she was really nice and listened. We had a good conversation. The second time, the day of my cystoscopy, she was a little rude and dismissive. Just ran through options in about 2 seconds. I made another appointment with her a few weeks later and had a list of questions, and she answered everything but again wasn't as nice as the first time. She put me on elavil, and when I asked her about the weight gain she said "then just don't eat." and then wanted to put me on a pain pill called nusyntra or something like that, but wrote the strength down wrong and I couldn't get it filled. It's such a high class of pain pill that the pharmacist said I would have to get a completely new perscription because GA Law says they can't call that one in (it is under lock and key). She isn't on my insurance, so I'm out of pocket with her. I'm thinking I may look for another doc on my insurance and see if I can find someone a little closer (I'm in Buckhead). Plus, I can do without her tude.

I see Dr. Shessell at Georgia Urology. He's fine. He definitely sounds A LOT better than your current Dr! In hearing about some of these great Dr's in other states, it doesn't sound like we have anyone here in Atlanta along those lines. He's knowledgeable and nice but not the warmest and the practice is very busy so doesn't spend a ton of time with you. He put me on Elmiron which seems to be working. Recommended instillations but those made me much worse so watching what I eat and really working on my stress level as for me that's the ultimate trigger. He did not prescribe any pain meds for flares which I probably could have/should have pushed for. If you end up finding someone new and fantastic let me know but in the meantime, I definitely think he'd be a much better choice than where you are now.

Forgot to say...I'm in Vinings and he's at Northside so would be an easier commute for you.

Well, I did some surfing around and found a guy at Georgia Urology in Cartersville/Acworth called Jeff Proctor and he is a specialist in IC (and he's on my insurance) so I'm going to make an appointment. I figure Cartersville is 40min and so is Alpharetta, so no biggie. I'm actually in between Howell Mill and Moore's Mill which was Buckhead when I moved here from Miami 10 years ago, but now it is Westside I guess. They keep changing it. Thanks for the suggestion, merepath. I may give your doc a shot too if Proctor doesn't work out.

I know this is an older thread, but it is so nice to see that I am not alone with this awful condition! Shout out to all the IC girls in Atlanta (surrounding areas) we should totally try to meet up or set up a group on google hangouts so we can all talk drs, dealing with IC, work, etc! I have added you all as "friends" and hope that we can try to set something up to keep in touch...I dont know about you ladies but my friends and even fiance (obvi peeps who arent suffering from IC) just dont always get it so it would be great to chat with people who do get it...sometimes!!
