  • Sewing????

Anyone Sew? I've been teaching myself over the last few weeks! (Probably why I haven't been on the boards so much) I've made 3 skirts and a top. MOST of it turned out great, only a skirt and the shirt have some issues.....but I'm having fun anyways. Anyone?? Want to trade pictures of garments?

I've been sewing for years and years. Just recently I've turned to making quilts --- I should say "quilt" since I've only finished one, but I'll be getting back to it soon.

I have been sewing for many years. It started when I first began working (more years ago than I care to think about) and with the $5.00 a week that I paid mum as board, she bought me my first sewing machine, a Singer.
I went crazy with it for years, buying material on my work lunch break and racing home to make it up so that I could wear the new skirt or shirt the next day!
My wonderful old Singer was traded in on a newer comtuperized model when I had my children. Sewing certainly saved me lots of money over the years. And now, like Donna, it is used to make quilts and furnishings for my home. I also like to makes soft toys for my great nephews and neices... hopefully it will be a few years yet before it gets used for toys and clothes for the grandchildren!
You haven't posted again Kara, have you been making any more clothes? What type of machine do you have?

Hey Kara, I love to sew - doesn't mean I am by any means great at it though, lol. Like you I am pretty much self taught, I have made a few simple skirts with elastic waistbands, some easy shorts, easy t-shirts, a tie for my ex, and a cummerbund for a Halloween costume one year and a few mock-turtlenecks. I haven't "picked up" the sewing machine in ages! I am hoping to be able to have a room soon (yeah, how long have I been waiting on that girls? LOL) where I can just leave it set up, as right now I have no where to set it up at all. Used to crack me up cutting out patterns on the floor - the cats loved it, thought I was down there for them, lol.

Unfortunately I don't have anything left that I have made, that's how long ago it was. One item (and I know I have talked about this disaster before, lol) was a great mock-turtleneck out of panne`, my first time setting sleeves, etc I was so proud! The sleeves turned out perfect. I went to try it on - um, I put the stretch of the fabric going the wrong way, and it got stuck on my head when I tried to take it off...not pretty, I was in a panic, lmao!

Now I want to get into home dec items, like curtains, pillows etc. Nice straight seams, lol.
        Hugs,
        Tracey

Oh you would have loved it D, lol. I mean, it's fitting isn't it? The girl who gets thrown from an Inchworm with wheels, gets stuck in a stretch shirt she put the stretch the wrong way on, lol. Of course it was hung up on my nose....hmmmmm

I'm having alot of fun teaching myself!

Traceann, I have about 10 things so far that have issues and I won't/can't wear....they either don't fit or have small small flaws that my perfectionism can't get over enough to wear! LOL LIke a tiny puff in the ease of the sleeve, I wil lthink that EVERYONE can see it, even though I ask my daughter and she thinks the stuff looks fine! LOL

I found a great website with lots of tips for beginners, its called patternreview.com TONS of info there and message boards so if you have any questions about your home dec items there are lots of really nice *experts* on hand to help you out, and online classes. woo hoo!

My DH bought me a really nice $600 Brother, so there is no turning back for me now! It is computerized and has an auto threader so it is MUCH easier to use than my old singer that I couldnt' even get prepped enough to START a project much less finish it!

I finally bought a new sewing machine this past summer. Mine is a Viking and I love it. I haven't had much time to do much sewing, but "soon" I'll get back to it. I need a new skirt and haven't been able to find anything to even try on. I usually go shopping and try on some things to see which style looks best, the get a pattern that is similar and make it. I also need a new winter robe and I really don't want to pay $50 for one so guess I'd best get busy.

AHHH!! I was just thinking about making a robe this morning! I think chenille would be WONDERFUL for that!

I do love that I can make all sorts of unique and pretty skirts that I would never be able to find at the mall! I am getting a ton of compliments on my growing skirt collection! I've decided I like godet skirts
