  • For all my fellow Crackpots

My sister (English professor sister, not disability lawyer sister) just sent me this recently. I think I had seen it before, but it wasn't so relevant then. So I just wanted to share this little parable with all of you:

An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole which she carried across her neck.

One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water.

At the end of the long walks from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.

For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water.

Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments.

But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do.

After two years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream.

"I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes
water to leak out all the way back to your house."

The old woman smiled, "Did you notice that there are flowers on your
side of the path, but not on the other pot's side?"

"That's because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted
flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you
    water them."

"For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to
    decorate the table.

Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this
    beauty to grace the house."

Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding.

You've just got to take each person for what they are and look
    for the good in them.

SO, to all of my crackpot friends, have a great day and remember
to smell the flowers on your side of the path!
Je vous souhaite de la joie, de la bonne santée, et tout ce qu'il y a de bon dans la vie.
Wishing you happiness and good health, and all the best out of life.

    Peace, Carolyn

I have been diagnoised for 6 1/2 years now. I have taken a long break from the ICN but really miss helping out my fellow IC patients and want to get back into posting.
1st hydro 4/07 showed no visible signs of IC but tons of mast cells in all my biopsy samples which did prove IC.
2nd hydro 4/13/09 showed dark purple glomerulations and I had a capacity of 450 cc's. This hydro proved that my IC had progressed.
I have tried every oral medication as well as rescue instills and DMSO.

I have been lucky enough to see Dr Hanno, the top IC specialist in PA who has told me due to the fact that I have not responded to any "standard" treatments that I have a severe, end stage case of IC with a horrible quality of life (didn't have to tell me that last part!)

        Carolyn,
Such a beautiful story from a beautiful woman. Your support has been amazing. The fact that you can take time out of your personally difficult week to lend a shoulder to me shows even more how amazing you are!

Thank you for saying that, Claudia. But, you know, that's why my sister sent it to me in the first place; she and I were both having terrible weeks, and she couldn't even get back from Houston where she lives, for the funeral. So she was trying to uplift us both, and I wanted to share that with you all.

So , really, Julie gets the credit for this one!

              Carolyn,
What area of Houston does you sister live in? I am in the NW of the Houston area. Small world huh??

Um, I'm not actually sure what part of Houston. West side, I'm pretty sure. She used to live on the far west side near Alief, but she bought a condo recently and even though I have been there more than once, I'm not sure I can place it correctly. I'll ask her.

There was a time, when I felt better, I used to visit her much more frequently and I had a pretty good mental map of the Houston area, but it seems to have faded. Sorry!
