  • Got a New JOB...kinda scared....got some questions!!!

Well hello to all....I have been offered a job as a data entry person making 14 an hour. Which for me is WONDERFUL. It is more than I made when I was working in a doc office.

This is my concern....would that affect my SS if I apply and at least try to see if I can work again? This is my thought on this.....I want to give it a try...to work...and if it doesn't work then ok and I will have that to back up my case. Or is that the WRONG way to go.

I have not worked since 04 cause I had my daughter.

I will have use of the restroom as often as I need as long as I get my job done. The employer said it was ok. I will be working on the 2nd shift which is from 3:30-11:30 at night. Which is good cause my mom will keep my kids. I will be able to go to the doc in the am and not miss work.

I have alot of thoughts right now and concerns. What happens if I start and this doesn't work out.....how does that work with the SS?? We at this point in time only have 1 car....and we are looking into getting another tomorrow. But what happens if this doesn't work out.

I'm a lil scared just cause I don't want us to get into any more finanical issues u know. I know in my heart that I need to help out with my family, but can I do this??? I want to get off of gov help u know..food stamps and mdcd for my kids.

I just also think for me that getting offered that kind of money is good!! It doesn't come around much.

Thanks 4 any thoughts u may have

That's awesome that you got offered a job making so much money!!!! I have no idea if that would hurt or help you filing for SS, I just wanted to say how great it is that you got the job offer.
    Christine

I have been diagnoised for 6 1/2 years now. I have taken a long break from the ICN but really miss helping out my fellow IC patients and want to get back into posting.
1st hydro 4/07 showed no visible signs of IC but tons of mast cells in all my biopsy samples which did prove IC.
2nd hydro 4/13/09 showed dark purple glomerulations and I had a capacity of 450 cc's. This hydro proved that my IC had progressed.
I have tried every oral medication as well as rescue instills and DMSO.

I have been lucky enough to see Dr Hanno, the top IC specialist in PA who has told me due to the fact that I have not responded to any "standard" treatments that I have a severe, end stage case of IC with a horrible quality of life (didn't have to tell me that last part!)

From what I've read in some of the posts about SS, you have to be off work for some length of time to be eligble for SS. Go to those posts about SS, and read up.

The job opportunity sounds great, congratulations if you take it. I understand being scared. I keep wanting to go back to my old job, but worry that I won't be good enough any more.

I wish you luck. Just consider whether you want to go the route of trying to get SS or if you want to try to work.

Take the job. Then if you find it's too much, that's something to put in your application for SS. You do not need to be off work for any particular amount of time to apply. You can apply the day you leave. You have to be able to convince them that your disability is likely to keep you from working for at least 12 months.
Je vous souhaite de la joie, de la bonne santée, et tout ce qu'il y a de bon dans la vie.
Wishing you happiness and good health, and all the best out of life.

          Peace, Carolyn

Congratulations on your new job! I have read things both ways on this so I dont know for sure. I have read on the SSD site that it SHOULDNT effect you, but I dont know if that means it SHOULDNT or that it WONT. I just truly dont know. But, I can tell you that I was off for 4 years and did the same thing...tried to work one last time, just to know for sure, before I applied for SSD. But, I only made it 3 hours before my new boss told me it would work out with me having to use the restroom so much. The work attempt was not held against me when I got Disability.

As for getting another car, my advice would be to try to borrow a car from your Mom or another family member for a few weeks before you buy one, just in case working is too much for you. That way, you wont be saddled with the extra car pmt if the job doesnt work out. Even if you can only borrow a car for one week, or even 2 or 3 days, I would do it. It is a big change going from being home and able to rest when you need to b/c you are tired and/or in pain, to working full time. Though I truly hope with all my heart that this works out for you, I cant help but worry a bit. That's why I hope you will borrow a car (or even rent one) for a week or two while you see if you will be able to work, before you get saddled with pmts for another car.

I say that b/c if things dont work out, and you do end up filing for Disability, it could take YEARS before you get approved. (And of course, you still might not get approved.) But, even if you do, it is usually a few years before it happens and before you get any money. So, if the extra car pmt would cause a finacial hardship for your family without any income from you, then I would hold off on getting one until you have a trial period at work to be sure you can make it.

Alternatively, if at all possible, you could buy an inexpensive car that you can pay cash for, and then, if things work out with your job, trade it in for something better in a few months, (once you know if you will be able to handle working.)

I hope I dont sound like Johnny Rain Cloud. I dont want to project that at all! I am very excited about your new job and completely think that you are doing the right thing in trying to work and trying to remove all doubts from your head as to whether or not you can work before applying for SSD. I commend you for doing this! I hope with all my heart that it works out for you. I guess I am just overly cautious and dont want to see you get saddled with the car pmt and have that extra financial burden in the event that you end up having to file for Disability after all.

I am probobly so cautious because I sold cars for 8 years before I started working at a furniture store and then went back to school to become and Interior Designer. When I sold cars, I saw people buy cars all the time b/c they started a new job and needed transportation. Then, a week or two later, they quit or got fired for whatever reason, and tried to bring the cars back, since they couldnt afford them without the job. But, the owners of the dealership wouldnt let them, and the car owners had no legal recourse. It broke my heart for them, but there was nothing I could do as a lowly salesperson. I guess that's why I lean on the cautious side.

Okay, I have probobly said too much. If I have butted in where it is none of my business, I apologize. I just worry too much and probobly overthink things. But, ultimately, you know your body and what you can do and what you cant. So, I wish you the best of luck!!

Please let us know how your new job goes and if you like it and if the people are nice and well,...everything!!! Since I cant work myself anymore, I have to live vicariously! So, I want to hear all the gory details! All the best to you!

Wishing you luck and sending you hugs,
            Amy
