Well, I had been thinking of renting out a hotel suite for my graduation party, so I drove around town asking for prices. Finally, I came to a place called the Crown, and decided to ask them. Here's my paraphrasing of the conversation with the employee, who we will call "Sky".
Me: Hi there! I was just wondering, do you have any spaces available for little get-togethers, like little parties and stuff?
Sky: Well, we have one big room, but it's rented out.
Me: Oh, I see. Sorry to bother you.
[At this point, I went back into the car, but my mom encouraged me to go back out and ask more questions]
Me: Hi, sorry to bother you again. I was just wondering, how many people would be allowed in one normal room at a time?
Sky: Oh, I'd say up to six.
Me: Wow, really? So, with two conjoined rooms, I could have about 12 people over for party?
Sky: Yeah, I'd say so.
Me: Wow, awesome! How much would that be? I would only be needing the rooms for a few hours; maybe from 6 PM to 11 PM.
Sky: Well, they would still be full price, but you could get them both for just under $100.
Me: Oh, wow! Can you hold two rooms for me for June 8th?
Sky: Sure. Just come back tomorrow with the deposit so I can make the reservation official.
So, I finally made all my invitations and gave them out to all the guests the next day. After the practice session for our graduation ceremony, I went back to the hotel. Instead of the guy we are calling "Sky", there was a blonde woman. I told her that the dude I had spoken to offered me two conjoined rooms for a grad party, and she seemed surprised. When I told her I intended to invite 11 other people, she became somewhat exasperated, and said "Sky" had the bad habit of agreeing to everything. She said that she was almost sure the manager wouldn't allow it. We went back and forth until, finally, she just told me to come back and talk to Sky when his shift started at 8.
Well, I didn't want to wait for them to change their story again! When I went back at 8, I turned on my phone's recording feature and slipped it in my purse. Now, there were two completely different people there, who completely denied every last thing that "Sky" had told me. They said only 3 people were ever allowed at one room at a time, and that under no circumstances would I ever be allowed to have a party there. I kept going back and forth until my phone ran out of memory, and, clear as a bell, loudly announced: END OF RECORDING. NO MEMORY SPACE
At that point, they completely refused to speak to me. I left in tears. I just finished calling every last guest and explaining to them, in my shaking voice, that I guess I wasn't having that grad party after all. I feel so dumb. I know recording people without their permission or consent is a crime. Do you think they would be spiteful enough to try to get me in legal trouble for it? One of my friends suggested suing them for false advertising, but I sure can't do that now, after I tried to bug our conversation right in front of the security camera. I just got so mad at them for changing their story like that, ugh!
Oh, and where should I have my graduation party now? I tried some other local hotels, but a lot of them want me to be 21 to rent out a room, and many of the inns don't even have any conjoined rooms or suites to have parties in. I wish I could just have it at my house, but I don't have a house; I live in a tiny two-bedroom apartment. I was thinking of maybe bringing this up with my landlady, who has known me for years, and offering her $100 to let me use on of the empty apartments in our complex for just a few hours. Do you think that would work?
