We are in the process of buying a new car. Today was day 2 of the haggling. The guy apparently thought I was an idiot as he literally offered me 2 grand less then the book value on my van. So I pull out the print off's that he is stating from showing him that his 13,000 is actually 14,995. He scrambles for words and hubby sits there. DUHHHHH. He knows he can come up with something after I tell him to work on it. He runs the credit work and tells me he will call in the morning. I told him don't bother becauseif he hits send on that application he better come to my terms. He hit send so hopefully he will call tomarrow and find me more amusing then today. I also hand print off's of a dealership 45 miles from here with a van just like mine with less options 3 times the mileage and they are asking 17,000. for it. Keep your fingers crossed. I don't need a new car but it would be nice to have a lower car payment.

There's one car dealer in our area who puts actual prices on cars and they don't haggle. Next time we car shop, I'm going there!
I totally detest dealing with the process of buying a car. One time I went into a dealership, asked the price of a car and how much trade-in they would offer for our car. The salesman suggested I test drive the car; I responded that I wanted to know the price etc. before I did a test drive. He said I didn't know how to buy a car --- I smiled sweetly at him and said "okay" and left! (Went back later to show him the identical car we bought from a different dealer ---)

Donna - good for you! I hope that salesman calculated how much commission he lost when you bought elsewhere. Those types of people feel it most in the wallet.
I also despise the whole car shopping dance. I've had car salesmen tell us it's okay to have a monthly car payment higher than the rent because you can live in your car but you can't drive your house! I found a salesman earlier this year that I was able to cut through the b.s. with. We let him know we'd done our homework, knew what we could afford and did not want to haggle. It was such a relatively low stress purchase that we went back to him the next month when my stepson totalled his car and needed a new one.

I HATE buying large things like cars, etc. I'm sending you ajust to help you get through the process!!
When I bought my car several years ago we got so lucky... I wanted a used Toyota Corolla and was thinking of getting one that was a little too old, but there was nothing else.
Then, Hubby (who was then my boyfriend) called me at work from the dealership! He said to get my checkbook ready because there was a GREAT car, exactly what I wanted. Someone had just traded it in, but another woman wanted it, so we had to get there quickly because our salesman had hidden it from the other salesmen so we could hopefully get there first. I didn't have a car at all at the time, so John came and got me and we drove back to the dealer... car was still there.
In the rush to process things before the other woman could even get on it, they weren't even able to clean it out after the previous user, but I said I would do it myself. Then, I asked how much they wanted and the guy said, "Uh, just $3995, ok?" I KNEW that was way UNDER what the car was worth, so I didn't haggle at all... and at that point I'd saved up enough to buy the car outright, no financing.
The process was quick, and an hour later I drove the car off the lot...As soon as we got home, John and I ran to the computer to check the Kelly Blue Book, and sure enough, the car was worth something like $8000, so essentially *I* ripped the dealer off for $4000
LOL
Gotta love it when that happens... and the car is a good car... still have it****

I really like CarMax. They're the no haggle people. We bought our car from them in 2003 and since have only had one minor problem with the car. My parents bought an SUV from them also in 2003 and also have only had a minor problem since. Their salespeople were not pressuring, either. It was nice.
Good luck with the car salespeople...grrr...thinking of setting foot on a car lot makes my bp go up LOL. My dad used to own a car lot and was a carsalesman waaaaaaay back in the day and his dad was a salesman too so he knows the ins and outs and he absolutely dreads it when he has to buy a new vehicle lol.Mommy to 2 crazy, wonderful kids and wife to the most amazing man in the world!Comment

We've, in the past, have only dealt with the "no haggle" dealerships. Now, though we're members of a large companies benefit program which is wonderful. They have set price lists for cars which average $7000-$15000 below dealership prices. You tell them what car you want, they send you a form with all the cars information and their price, you take that to the dealership, sign the papers and drive off the lot. Time spent at the dealership is less than an hour.
Hopefully you'll soon be in your new car!

Good luck in your car buying. Car Max is great to deal with. My eldest son did business with them back in October. Didn't have a trade in or anything. My husband went with him as he use to sell cars a few years ago, after a credit check on him (which of course, he didn't have any credit( Put a deposit on it, and drove off. Everyone was pleased.Comment
