  • taxes and IC

I didn't know where to put this. Have any of you found out of pocket expenses related to IC that you can deduct on your income taxes because of IC? I know I can't deduct Evian water, although I think I should be able to. Is there anything I am missing? Thanks!!!

    Hi Carly,

Maybe prescriptions and doctor's visits? Our accountant said we could claim those.

      Carly,
I went to the IRS and took this link, if you read it, that might help. Taxes can be so individual based on your income and deductions. If you have any questions I would contact someone who knows how it all works to help you.

When I had my taxes done I was only able to deduct medical and rx's... I am able to check the disabled box of course but, that don't help by any means. I am sure if there was a way to be able to claim a disease of any sort especially IC, Jill would be sure to let us know, as she has updated us on so many other things.

As I understand it, this will all depend on your income and what you are able to claim. A person with lower income and mortgage interest etc. may be able to do more than someone who makes more money and doesn't have enough deductions to itemize. That is why I said it is so individual. Sometime back I was in a situation that I was able to claim a lot. Meaning I kept a mileage log, dentist bills, most anything that was deductable I was able to do. Now we can't. Our income is higher and we can't take anything off. That is the reason I posted the link to the IRS brochure. That in combination with someone who does taxes should help a lot.

I don't want anyone to misinterpert my post so I am re posting to make sure that under my circumstances and I also put "When I filed".
To go deeper into the conversation about claiming anything for IC I did look into what you can and cannot claim.. The laws keep changinge every year and different people are able to claim different things, such as the child tax credit, heat tax credit.. so forth and so on... You have to meet the states critera have x amount of dollars to be able to claim, with x amount of income to be able to claim. medical and rx those are 2 different catogories now. Its sad we pay pay pay and don't get back half of what you paid in back.

I second the already offered information. It is extremely individual. But what it comes down to is whether you've spent more money on deductible items than you'd otherwise get for a standard deduction.

Two years ago I got all my medical receipts together along with the other things I could deduct but with my husband and I together, our standard deduction for two people was more than that, so we just took the standard. Otherwise we would've lost money.

My advice is to try it both ways and see which gives you a lower owed tax (or larger refund! )
