  • Retention

I can’t find the thread that was asking about retention. I have retention.
In the beginning my bladder capacity with out stretching is 550+ with retention usually around 300cc. Which meant my bladder was basically ½ full all the time. When I started instillations retention is between 30cc and 125cc.

At first I had to instill every day (or even 2 times a day sometimes). Now I instill on the average of 3 times a week and I have only occasional problems with retention. I know if I have retention I have waited too long between instills.

Before I was diagnosed with IC my gynecologist told me that I might need to cath to help with retention. As you know, retention causes sudden fairly intense pain that is only relieved by going to the bathroom. Cathing would certainly take care of retention but you might have to cath every time you went to the bathroom. The treatments calm my bladder and it can contract more efficiently so I don’t have the retention.
