  • Hello, I need help or advice

    Hello,

I am new to this forum. I have had IC flares off and on for about 15 years now, but most of the time I am feeling good.

However, I will have hip surgery soon and they want to put me on morphine the first day through an IV pump, and then on oral Oxycodone or Perocet or Tramadol after that. Both the Oxycodone and Perocet say they can cause urinary retention or difficulty urinating, which is a problem for me on certain meds. And I believe Tramadol could do the same.

Has anyone had any experience with this or has this happened to anyone? Does anyone know of a medication for moderate pain that will not most likely cause urinary retention or difficulty urinating? They say I cannot take Ibuprofen or Aleve because I will also be taking a blood thinner.

I would appreciate any help on this. If you could tell me any meds for pain that have worked well for you or have not worked well for you would be great. I just need Help.

    Thanks, Sharon

I have been on both Percocet and Tramadol and have had no problems with retention in either one, so I'm no help there... I will say that withdrawing from Tramadol was horrendous for me, and I wasn't even on high doses, or for that long. I will never take that medicine again.

You may want to talk with the anaestheseologist about this ahead of time. They are pretty knowledgeable. (Somethimes more than the doc). Would try to do that, and good luck, let everyone know how you make out. Jill, wife of Bob

        This is to meResque,

How long were you on Tramadol and what was the dosage? What were your withdrawal symptoms? I certainly do not want problems with withdrawal.

        Thanks, Sharon

I was on 50mg every 6 hours. I took it for one week. I also had to stop taking my Elavil because these two meds combined can cause seizures, and I was in a WORLD of hurt after being off Elavil for a week!

When coming off of it, I had many symptoms of withdrawal, such as severe mood swings, sweating, palpitations, restless legs, and insomnia. It was AWFUL. I didn't sleep for more than 15 minutes at a time for 4 days, and felt like I couldn't keep my legs still. Felt like I had the flu, but never had a fever.

Given the choice between Percocet, Vicoden, and Tramadol, I would take Vicoden or Percocet any day. Tramadol also didn't come CLOSE to helping the pain I was in at the time... Vicoden did. I do know that many have no problems with it, and think it really does help. Doctors are also much more likely to prescribe it.
