  • I am new and have pelvic floor pain

This is my first time and I'm not sure if I'm doing this correctly.

I have had bladder pain/aching since September. The Doctor I saw yesterday wants to treat my pelvic floor pain with a muscle relaxant, Baclofen. Has anyone tried this? I am also to find a pelvic floor specialist physical therapy. I live in central Pennsylvania. Does anyone have a suggestion?

    Thanks much,

Hi and welcome to the ICN. Have you been diagnosed with IC? Are you seeing a urologist? You didn't say what kind of Dr you are seeing. You can look on the homepage here and see if there are any PT listed for your area. You do need to call any PT you consider and ask them some questions, such as: Do you treat pelvic floor problems? How do you treat them? (it is recommended that those with IC never do kegels, if a PT suggest them it is a good tip that they are not familiar with our needs)
I am not familiar with baclofen but I do know it is a muscle relaxant so it could potentially work. Some of us use valium to help with our pelvic floor problems.
Are you taking anything else for your IC?

If you try the board for PT recommendations and don't find help you might look on the thread for your state and ask there.

Thanks Sandra, One urologist diagnosed IC but then found a small tumor and the next urologist removed the tumor but wants to wait and try to resolve the pelvic floor dysfunction before dianosing IC.

Hmmm, that tends to be one of those chicken or the egg controversies. Some think IC causes pelvic floor dysfunction. I could see how if you did have a tumor that things weren't responding correctly. The uro didn't have any suggestions for a PT? Well, I would definitely use the suggestions I made above for looking for someone. I know not all Pt's will treat PFD. Try googling Isa Herrera, she is a top PT in NY and has written a book. It is available on this site, Ending Female Pain. You can go to her site and get some info about the book to see if you might want to purchase it. I have it and love it.

I hope you are able to find someone to help you . I really hope you don't have IC!! Keep us updated on your progress. We do have several member in Pennsylvania, hopefully they will be able to recommend someone for you.

Do your phone calls. We actually found a PT through another PT through another PT. They are a tight knit group and refer to each other. Ours was very familiar with PFD and IC, she was a gem. You have to take the time to make the calls, and ask to speak with the PT before you even make an appointment. The gals in the front sometimes do not know. Ask for a call back and have your list of questions ready. We probably made like 20 calls before we found the right person, so don't get discouraged. Good luck, you will find one. Jill, wife of Bob

Thank you much for this help! I have an appt with a local PT who claims to do PFD on Wed. What questions do you think would be most helpful for me to ask her?

I agree with everyone but, I would stay on the IC diet. You can download the IC diet here on the forum. I wish you well and keep in touch this forum is an excellent site to get understanding and information.

I am currently on baclofen for pelvic pain and am seeing an PT for internal and external therapy. The baclofen has helped a little, which is very good because I am now able to tell that it was muscle pain. I am hoping to switch to low dose valium which my PT recommends for pelvice pain. I have never had much success withthe IC diet and have always wondered why. I think my IC issues (chicken and egg theory comes into play here) may have been caused by pelvic floor problems as I had them long before IC. Just a thought, but the PT and muscle relaxers have given me the only relief (though small) I have had in 3.5 years. I would stay on the diet in addition to PT. can't hurt. I still do the diet for fear of what would happen if I didn't!

Thank you both! I am staying on the IC diet. Your thoughts are encouraging. Appreciate your help! Do you have any suggestions for questions for the PT I will see on Wed?

What does of Baclofen are you on? Does it make you sleepy?
