Err, this may be a really stupid question but did those over the counter meds treat bladder infections? Have you checked if you have a UTI? Whenever I had more of a burning sensation in my urethra more then normal it was usually because I had a UTI...Diagnosed with IC when I was 14 (in 2003)
Diagnosed with IBS when I was 19 (in 2008)
-At 14 had a cystoscopy with hydrodistention (confirmed IC, after only 3 months of searching)
-At 19 I had another cystoscopy with hydrodistention (because of elmiron side effects)
-From when I was 14 to 19 I was on Elmiron, but had a lot of side effects
-Had a colonoscopy (because of elmiron side effects) - after which I was diagnosed with IBS.
-Did instills weekly for over a year (after that I got chronic uti's)
-Thought I was in remission for a few years, however several of the uti's I thought I was getting were actually bad IC flares, and the urgent care drs never told me nothing was growing out in the culture.
-Medications that I'm taking right now that help with IC symptoms:
-hydroxyzine hcl 25mg
-amitriptyline hcl 35mg
-Cyclosporine (unmodified) 400mg (dosage subject to change)
Overall I have IC, IBS, Pelvic Floor Dysfunction, Recurrent bladder infections, and some menstrual issues as well.

I don't know of an over the counter medications that will get rid of an active bladder infection. Burning can mean infection so it does warrant testing.

One of my biggest problems with IC is burning. It is my most annoying and most prevalent issue with it. The reason it took me so long to find out I had it was, I kept being tested for UTIs and they came back negative. This went on for over a year. So, I get what you mean about the burning and not having a UTI. I use a medicine that is prescription called UTA. It turns your urine blue and is kind of expensive, but it relieves the burning if I get a flare. I take it every 6 hours for about 3 days and usually get a lot better. It has 4 different medicines in it that help your bladder, maybe check it online. I haven't seen many people on this forum that take it, but I think they take things that are similar.
Some of the things over the counter just make you numb, but don't have any healing properties as I understand it. Hope that helps!treatment:
-I follow the IC diet to the letter
-acupuncture and chinese herbs
-Prelief
-UTA
-instillations as needed
-beginning yoga and specialized yoga for breathing and relaxation
-Wellbutrin
-Klonopin
main symptoms: pain and burning

They are similar. I was on Urelle and then my insurance wouldn't pay for it but will pay for UTA.It must be cheaper.I have not had to use it for 6 months or so. I am in a "medication"remission with Elmiron. No pain or burning for quite a while.
