Hi there I am a 41 year old male that was diagnosed with IC last October. My story is I had never had any issues until December of last year. At that time I started to have to get up 1 time a night to go pee. I thought it was just getting older, but I was wrong. My night time trips then got more frequent and were occurring every 2-3 hour, and I had intense pain. I went to the doctor in April and they thought I had a bladder infection.
This was on a Friday and I was going on vacation, the dr said the test will not come back until Monday so we will treat this with anti-biotic. I took them and went off for my vacation. I did my half ironman in pain, and needless to say it did not get better neither did the frequency.
I went to several dr's and even had one say you do not have IC without testing me (this was a very large university hospital). The dr wanted to put the interim into me immediate he said it will definitely take care of your urgency and PAIN. After doing some research needless to say I ran away from this dr. as he did not want to find out what was wrong.
I went to another dr, who had previously seen me and at that time though it might be prodistidis (spelling). This time he agreed it was likely IC and put me on Elmeron, and a antihistamine.
To date I can say my frequency has gone away (but it has always come and gone) but the pain is constant. Even on a good day I have to take vicodin to be able to function. This is disturbing to me because I am a recovering alcoholic. But I do not abuse them I just have to take them to get by.
I used this sight to find a local doctor (50 miles away) and he did a bladder distention and proved I had IC. That was the good news finally someone had a definite answer for me, the bad news nothing has worked for the pain.
I have had the instations, the tens machine has been recommended but I cannot afford that treatment due to my insurance not covering any of that procedure. At 1 point as an otherwise healthy person I was taking 8 different drugs.
In the last month I have switched to a 100% natural diet, not just the IC diet but I will not eat anything that is not natural. I have started to exercise again biking and running trying to lose the 30 lbs. My though is being heavy puts pressure on the bladder and it may cause pain (worst case if it does not work I get skinny). The other thing I have done is started to take myself off the drugs that have not done any good.
I am still taking the elmeron (i have been told I need to be on this for a year), tramadol for pain(on not so bad days), and vicodin (almost every day), a muscle relaxer. My thought is the drugs are not easy on my system and many have petroleum in them so getting off the prescriptions goes with my all natural diet. I stopped each of the other 4 drugs 1 at a time to make sure if things got worse I would know what one it was.
My big issue is pain, pain, pain, pain, I have not had a pain free day in so long I don't remember what it was like to be pain free. I try to keep myself occupied all of the time so I don't think about it.
If anyone has any recommendations on pain management besides the drugs let me know what works for you. I will try about anything at this point. Thanks for listening.
