  • My, how life has so suddenly changed!

Hi everyone! I was diagnosed with IC 9 days ago by my OBGYN after unsuccessfully trying to treat a group B strep UTI with antibiotics, and having a positive potassium sensitivity test. In conjuction with the UTI symptoms, I was experiencing a decent amount of pelvic pain and painful sexual stimulation. Of course, like most of us, I was devastated. I'm only 24 years old and it was a difficult diagnosis to swallow. When my doctor said alcohol was a big trigger for people with IC, I just knew I had it. I had been googling "painful urination after drinking alcohol" in the few weeks prior to being diagnosed and was baffled why it felt like I had a UTI after a night of drinking.

The first few days after being diagnosed were pretty difficult. I'm a pretty emotional and dramatic person (gotta be honest =]) and it took a moment to process what was happening in my body and the lifestyle changes I was going to have to make. The PST caused the worst flare up I've had yet but it subsided rather quickly, thank god. My doctor strongly recommended starting the IC diet right away and prescribed Elmiron (100mg, 3 times a day). After doing a TON of reading on this website and others, I grabbed some aloe vera supplements also from the grocery store. I know the Elmiron doesn't deliver results within a week, but I have been feeling SO MUCH BETTER and I think it's a result of the diet more than the Elmiron. Before being diagnosed, I drank an ungodly amount of soda, caffeine, alcohol, and energy drinks, and spicy ethnic foods are my absolute favorite! I would also say I'm a pretty regular heavy drinker (more honesty), which seems to be my biggest trigger (boo!). Since cutting all of that out, I can't believe the amount of relief I've experienced. I have also been doing my best to remain calm and eliminate as much stress from my life as possible and that seems to also be playing a huge role in the rapid reduction of my symptoms in such a short period of time.

I've been pretty scared to make a post on here and introduce myself and tell my story, but now that I'm feeling more hopeful about recovering from IC, I know this is just the right thing to do. My family and friends are a great support, but I know it's important to have people in my life that understand what it's like to have IC. I really look forward to being apart of this community and fighting for recovery!

For me daily exercise is a must plus following the diet and drinking only Evian water are essential.

You will see tons of great advice on this forum plus the archives are very informative.

An occasional white chocolate martini with potato vodka doesn't bother me at all but wine, beer or whiskey - never!

        Welcome and good luck.

What type of exercise do you do? Some of the literature my doctor gave me said to stay away from vigorous exercise because it can cause a flare. I was going to the gym everyday before being diagnosed and I stopped immediately after reading that

Can you tell me more about drinking only Evian water? A friend was telling me about drinking alkaline water because it has a lower pH than regular tap or even bottled water but my doctor/literature never mentioned anything about it.

I appreciate the feedback! Thank you!!

Some ICers find that their city water is a problem and drinking bottled water helps. I live in the country and we have a deep well with no chemicals so I drink tap water at home. When away from home I buy bottled spring water --- I usually get what's on sale, but I do read the label to be sure it's plain spring water with no additives. I drink a lot so Evian would be too expensive for me.

Walking is usually okay exercise. I can't do any exercises that put strain on abdominal muscles, but walking actually makes me feel better. I have a treadmill for when the weather is bad.
