  • IC? To be or not to be?

Still in the early stages of testing and the process of elimination to narrow down the culprit of my symptoms, I figure I may as well get educated on the diagnosis that appears to be in my very near future.

To make a long story shorter, I've put together a "timeline" below, of events leading up to where I am now:

May 2009: Annual physical. Doc "says" I have a sinus infection. Stuffy nosed, but not convinced I had an infection, I reluctantly filled the Rx for the ABT (anitibiotic) as I had had a really bad sinus & double ear infection just months before and was all to clear on how that felt and wasn't willing to risk it.

End of May 2009: ABT caused a yeast infection, back to the Dr. to get Rx for antifungal. She checks my sinuses, says they're still "green" and prescribes another round of ABT's to go with the anitfungal.

June 2009: 3 days into new ABT, depsite having had this med before, I begin having SEVERE stomach cramps. Certain something has ruptured in my abdomen, I go to the ER. They perform all grades of tests including a CT scan with contrast/dye. However, before administering the dye, the nurse gives me a syringe of Solumedrol in my IV to prevent an allergic reaction to the dye (they weren't convinced I wasn't having an allergic reaction othe ABT I had been taking for the 3 days prior, thus the immunity reducing drug was a precaution) So after I had been on ABT's for two weeks, they reduced my immune response with the Solumedrol. Turns out the stomach pain was a side affect of the ABT.

June 2009: Symptoms begin: It started with what appeared to be a yeast infection, which was totally expected after what my body has just been through. Yeast infection turned bacterial vaginosis (BV). Cleared both infections and then the vaginal itching began despite popping anitfungals like candy as prescribed by my physician.

Late July 2009: After nearly 6 weeks of fatigue, malaise, and itching, "the burn" settled in one morning after I pee'd. I immediately drove myself to my Dr.'s office and demanded a U/A, Pap test, blood work, etc. For 6 weeks I had felt like crap and she never once suggested testing my urine. (I've since changed docs) It never dawned on me that it could be a UTI since I was a month shy of turning 35 and had never had one before. I assume that because of the immuno supressing drugs administered prior to the CT scan that my body just didn't react to the "bacteria" as quickly as it normally would have and to further complicate things, I didn't have classic UTI symptoms. Itching was my main symptom until the burn made it more obvious. Anway, my U/A came back abnormal that day and I started yet more ABT's. The kicker: the culture came back negative and I've been doing this ever since.

Spring 2010: My doc says there is research to support the idea that the dyes used for CT scans cause harm to the bladder lining. With that knowledge and trace amounts of blood in my urine, it earns me a trip to a Uro. He does a U/A & confirms the blood. Orders a pelvic MRI, negative. Next U/A in his office is normal & he then doesn't believe further evaluation is necessary. Never gives me a "reason" for my symptoms. I get the feeling he thinks it was just a fluke test or temporary irritation, but he wanted to refer me to a nutritionist? I didn't understand the whole nutritionist thing then, but I get it now.

Spring 2010-Now: Off and on visits to my primary Dr. for "UTI's" Always the same story, abnormal u/a in the office; culture negative. Although last Friday they did a micro u/a and I had white blood cells and blood in my urine as well as the Ph was 6.0, which is somewhat acidic. Albeit, the office u/a showed bacteria, the micro u/a was negative for bacteria. Went for a pelvic/vaginal ultrasound on Wednesday & am waiting on the results of that. If negative, I'm thinking she'll send me back to the Uro for a cystoscopy. We're incorporating my annual check up into this as an opportunity to do a pap/pelvic exam, blood work, etc, which will help the process of elimination. I started the IC diet on Sunday and feel much better, although my symptoms are not as extreme as some others here have to bare, but it is helping. I've noticed with my menstrual period having started, I don't have hardly any of my typical symptoms, which is a relief. Only problem is it's harder to stick to the IC diet when you feel good!

    Thus begins my journey....

Sorry to hear about all your troubles! I hope you figure it out soon.
I am interested to hear about the dyes from CT scans irritating bladders. My irritations started after I had an appendectomy in which I had a CT scan before my operation. I remember waking up and peeing every 5 minutes for 2 hours.
I would love to find more info on the connection if your doctor has it!

    Good luck with everything!

      Thank you!

I got the results of my ultra-sound today and it was normal (Yay!)

My "IC" symptoms have pretty much disappeared with the start of my monthly cycle. I'm not sure what the relation is there, but I've seen posts about it here where some ladies have had the same thing where their cycle causes their symptoms to disipate and others whose cycles have had the opposite affect.

So, it's a wait and see game at this point. Once my cycle is over, if my symptoms re-appear then I'm to call my Dr. and she's going to refer me back to the uro for a cystoscopy.

You sound just like me! I had these IC symptoms start after wayyy to many antibiotics. My poor immune system was trashed. I also had the yeast infection of my life afterwards.. even after popping numerous antifungals too!!... I dont have pain or anything, just irritation, and need to PEE ALL THE TIME. I also have hardly ANY symptoms on my period and 2 week after my periofd I am pretty much symptoms free as well. I found last month it was like that and then the 2 weeks before my period, my symptoms came back. I just finished my period, and am now feeling good again for the most part, with some minor irritation. Not sure whats going ON...!! I think it IS IC though.. but I have never been officially diagnosed by hydro and cytoscopy, but just on symptoms alone.... Strange. Anyways! The IC diet helps alot!! I am also on the anti candida diet as yeast is DEFINATLEY (I believe) to blame after all the antibiotics... I think the yeast just took over my body basecly...Ick. It is possible that you have a mild form of IC after all the antibiotics damaged your immune system...? I think that the track I am on too Anyways, I have found a few things that help so far, so I hope you get some answers soon!

        Hope you find reliefe soon!!!
        28 yrs old,

I have little to no problems now with my bladder, unless I am very stressed out, I forget to take Elmiron for a few days, or I eat or drink something that I know is a trigger...(i.e) like eating a tomato or drinking tea.... Took a long time to get here, but it IS possible to feel good again I just want people who are new to know that IT CAN get better, and for every one person who is suffering, there are hundreds of others who feel GREAT because they have control of thier IC.

What Works: Tylenol 3's, Pyridium, Elmiron (Going on 4 years now!) HOT showers!!!

Medications/ Vitamins: Elmiron-100mg 4x's daily Tylenol 3's/Advil (flaring) Vitamin D, WILD salmon oil 4x gels in the morning, Women's ONE a DAY multivitamin (the gummy kind doesn't make me flare) and PROBIOTICS!

Hi Jenn! Thank you for the well wishes! Our stories do appear to have lots of similarities. I do have mild symtpoms, which usually consists of burning and just an overall feeling of pelvic irritation and some occasional frequency/urgency. I haven't noticed a pattern yet in correlation with my menstrual cycle, but considering your pattern of being symptom free during and mid-month of your cycle, I think I may have to go back and compare mental notes to my menstrual calendar. Thanks for pointing that out! It's funny, I don't feel this way all of the time. It comes and goes. When I became symptomatic this time I was under alot of stress at work and was indulging in a couple of adult beverages a couple times a week. To be more specific, Diet Coke & coconut rum. Yum! The Diet Coke being the triple threat of the two evils for a possible IC bladder. Not to mention I wasn't taking in enough water through out the day. Perfect storm? You bet!

I did start the IC diet last Sunday, which seemed to help. However, my cycle was on it's way, so I'm not sure which one really caused the symptoms to taper. Probably a little of both.

To answer your question about antibiotics damaging your immune system...in my opinion (and I'm not a medical professional), I'm not so sure it's the antibiotic that does the actual damage as much as it allows for a breeding ground for bacteria overgrowth. Since not only does it kill bad bacteria, but good also. Thus, your body's natural defense system is weakened and un-balanced, which has the potential to create a myriad of problems. Like Wendy Cohan, the author of "A Better Bladder," I do believe IC is a systemic "disease." I just started reading the book, but I'm already convinced she has it all figured out. I realize that I don't even have an IC diagnosis at the moment (and hope not to), but it never hurts to get educated just in case!

          Best wishes to you,

          Stacy

Yes entirely right about the antibiotics killing everything good. Ugh I just wish I had of known to take probiotics at least!!! Ah well. Each Dr I went to kept telling me ah it will go away, ba bla bla... Soemtimes I still hope for that, as I have never been truly diagnosed... but yeah I came here to get educated as well. Turns out that since coming here and listening to others ideas I feel better. My symptoms come and go as well... I can never be sure when I wake up. Ussually when I only get up once a night to pee, and the day before I had only minor symptoms, I can tell it will ussually be good. It really hits me when I am stressed though, even if I am stressed for only minuets, my bladder freaks for the rest of the day. SO ANNOYING.
