  • Newly Diagnosed

Hi, my name is Eden. Last month I was FINALLY diagnosed with IC. I am 19 yrs old and have been having urinary/kidney/bladder problems since I was 3. I have had 2 kidney stones, over 30 UTI's, and now this. This past week, I have been hurting after my first urination in the morning. Is this common for people with IC? Also, the one thing, besides medications, that really helps me is hot baths. Not warm, but hot! i feel NOTHING when i get in the bath. Is that normal too? Just wanting to know if other people feel the same way? I'm annoyed to say the least. Anyone who would like to share their story or have advice on ways to deal, I would really appreciate it!

    Thanks,
    Eden

Hi Eden! Welcome to the ICN!

It sounds like you've accumulated quite the medical history for someone so young! And now IC? Not fair!

I don't know how common it is with IC but I do find that the more concentrated my urine gets the more noticeable my symptoms are. And there's nothing like a long nights sleep to help that urine become concentrated.

I guess I've never tried a really, really hot bath, but I do know that I often retreat to the tub when I'm in a flare. It seems to help my symptoms a lot.

Hang in there, it usually gets better!

      Hi Eden,

Sending you hugs............sorry you are having to deal with this at such a young age.

I take a lot of baths myself. I go for a warm to hot bath, but also use Epsom salts in the bathwater. It really helps reduce the inflammation of the external tissues.

Are you following the IC Diet? That really is one of the best ways to help yourself and it may even help your other treatments work better.

Did you know that up to 94% of interstitial cystitis patients find some symptom relief when they change their diet, and that dietary modification is recommended as a first line treatment for IC? Check out the IC Food List to get started!

I take reallllly hot showers too! Helps alot.
        28 yrs old,

I have little to no problems now with my bladder, unless I am very stressed out, I forget to take Elmiron for a few days, or I eat or drink something that I know is a trigger...(i.e) like eating a tomato or drinking tea.... Took a long time to get here, but it IS possible to feel good again I just want people who are new to know that IT CAN get better, and for every one person who is suffering, there are hundreds of others who feel GREAT because they have control of thier IC.

What Works: Tylenol 3's, Pyridium, Elmiron (Going on 4 years now!) HOT showers!!!

Medications/ Vitamins: Elmiron-100mg 4x's daily Tylenol 3's/Advil (flaring) Vitamin D, WILD salmon oil 4x gels in the morning, Women's ONE a DAY multivitamin (the gummy kind doesn't make me flare) and PROBIOTICS!

        Me in my graduation gown!
