  • Pyridium Dangers

Back again. The AUA endorses pyridium as a first line treatment for mild IC. The OTC version works for me.

However, I have heard other people say that their doctors won't let them take it, that it cannot be taken long term as it will do something to some organ, etc. If that's the case, I certainly want to know about it.

Why would the AUA endorse this medicine as a first line treatment for mild IC if it were dangerous to take long term???

Pyridium should only be taken long term under the supervision of a physician. One of the possible side effects of long term use is that body fluids (sweat and tears) can turn orange --- if you wear contact lenses they can be permanently stained.

We all have to weigh the benefits against the potential for harm when taking any medication.

It has been taken off the market in Canada, I think it is thought to be a carsonogenic (sp).

I still use AZO, occasionally and my Dr. knows I do.

There are still a few local facilities that produce pyridium tablets in Canada (there is one in the city where I live). It is no longer easily available in Canada, not because of health concerns over carcinogenicity, but because the supplier who made it for the Canadian market, doesn't make it anymore (due to an increased difficulty in getting the raw mineral material for it).

Canadians can order AZO online or inquire with theur uros about local availability.

From my understanding, long term pyridium can be hard on the liver (like many other drugs), but occasional use for IC flares is fine.

IC symptoms: Cramping, burning, frequency. Pain!

Pain management: Ibuprofen. AZO. Marijuana. Prelief. The IC Diet.

I got and rx for prydium and it was 156.00! It is only sold at a one store in my area, and are being discontinued due to lack of raw materials as I was told by rite aide and walgreens. My husbands insurance won't cover it nor will my bravo from medicare. I been buying azo over the counter and use as needed. Some one told me they sell them at Dollar General, I haven't been there yet, but I would be sure to check the dates on them. Urised was great, it helped so much better, but that to has been suspended du to lack of raw materials. urgh! I hate we all have to figt this stupid disease!

              28 yrs old,

I have little to no problems now with my bladder, unless I am very stressed out, I forget to take Elmiron for a few days, or I eat or drink something that I know is a trigger...(i.e) like eating a tomato or drinking tea.... Took a long time to get here, but it IS possible to feel good again I just want people who are new to know that IT CAN get better, and for every one person who is suffering, there are hundreds of others who feel GREAT because they have control of thier IC.

What Works: Tylenol 3's, Pyridium, Elmiron (Going on 4 years now!) HOT showers!!!

I take azo at the moment, it is the only thing so far that helps with urgency and frequency, it is frustrating that it can not be taken for a long time since it does help me. We can not get pyridum here.

I am starting with raw food diet, juices and green smoothies and salads. Nothing else (rx meds and holistic things like cystoprotek, IC aloe vera) helps with my frequency, urgency and burning. I was also tested and I am gluten sensitive, lactose intolerant, few other food allergies, so all in all it made perfect sense to try go "raw". Fingers crossed

                Right now I am on:
                Vesicare 5 mg
                Other stuff:
Herbal mix for bladder and kidneys
                Herbal mix for adrenals
                Fish Oil
                Bladder Control
                Colostrum

AZO is a low dose pyridium. My suggestion is to talk with your physician about taking it. It's important to let your doctor know about all over the counter meds you take --- and also important to follow the guidelines on the container unless your physician advises otherwise.

My Dr. knows I take AZO and even tells me to take it from time to time.

I don't use it very often, just when my bladder is really burning from something.

I box lasts me many months, but when I need it it is nice to have.
