  • Any advice on flares from vitamins?

Been dealing with IC for about 12 yrs. I was in remission for the past 4 yrs. However, it came back full force in March. Terrible time with not only diet but health in general.
High cholesterol, hair falling out and sores in the mouth. IC is so severe that even foods on the IC diet are too harsh for me. Rural doctors want me to take Fish Oil capsules and Vit D with Calcium but really hesitant to take anything as it may cause a flare. Neurologist says my bladder
is not emptying and for me to do kegel exercises for 3 months and then return. Also prescribed flomax, anyone getting relief from this medication. Wish I had access to Doctor’s knowledgeable in this field.
In the past most meds for IC have not helped. Have been taking Cysto Protek for about 4 mos. I picked up some corn silk, not sure if it will cause a flare. Anyone try this, fish oil, or Vit D with Calcium? Any comments are welcome!!

I take vitamin D; I couldn't tolerate fish oil --- it gave me severe diarrhea.

If you're retaining, flomax may help. If that one doesn't work, there are several others that might.

My doctor suggested Tums for calcium.

I take vitamin D with no problems. I have to because my levels are very low. But it seems to be ok. However, if I take it with Calcium I get a stomach ache and experience more constipation. Like Donna, I use Tums these days for calcium (when I remember).

I used to take Fish Oil but stopped because my flares were so bad. Not sure if it made a difference and am hoping to add it later. I try to eat Salmon at least once a week these days.

Diagnosed: 2011 - have had symptoms for over 20 years. Diagnoses so far: Overactive Bladder, then IC, and now Myofacial Pelvic Pain Syndrome.

Medicines: For IC am doing PT, and will be taking Gabapentin, Ativan, Tramadol and Ambien. Ice packs and drinking vanilla shakes help. Foods that cause a flare, tomatoes, yogurt, coffee, soda, all sports drinks, and most teas. Take Verapamil, Naproxen (as needed), Omeprazole, Frova (as needed) and receive Botox shots(every three months) for migraines. For allergies I use Claritin and Flonase. (Feel free to ask me any questions about meds.)

Other conditions: Migraines, allergies, mild IBS.

I take vit D3, calcium citrate, magnesium citrate, and fish oil with no problems.
If I take the calcium without magnesium I will sometimes get some bloating and gas, but as long as I'm getting enough magnesium with it it's ok.

I take vitamin D with no problems; I can't really speak to anything else.

One other thing -- I'd be very cautious about doing kegels. They are really only good for helping with incontinence. If you have any kind of pelvic tightness, you shouldn't do them (based on my own experience, and a lot of research I've done).

I take calcium and vitamin D 2 x a day with no problems. I used to take
fish oil but quit because I was afraid it might have soy in it.
