  • Trying hard To cure My IC

Last month I was diagnoised with IC through a cytoscopy done at the hospital. I do not have pain that is commonly associated with IC. All I have is urgency and frequeny and sometimes a bit of stinging at the tip of the penis. I belief a bacteria infection is causing my IC. I sent out my urine sample for a Broth Culture through United Medical Labs yesterday. And today I had a urine sample taken for Mycoplasma/Ureaplasma real-time PCR. Which was recommended by a microbiologist in the family.

My goal is to get to the bottom of my IC, I will post the results when they become availabe it'll take over a week from now unless they find out sooner. Ill keep everyone posted.

I too have been tested for Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma yesterday.... I believe "my" IC is from a low level bacteria.... Sorry, but most people don't wake up one day and have these problems... SOMETHING went wrong for me in mid june of this year!

I know I thought the same thing too and I tried everything! I was tested for ureplasma, had a broth culture, and was on too many antibiotics to count....mine all started after I had an infection and was on a TON of antibiotics ...

Anyways nothing came back, after countless blood tests, swabs, cultures, urinalysis, they found NOTHING. I know its a concern for many people whos IC started suddenly.. they all wonder how it could come on so fast without being an infection!?? I wondered the same thing. Truth is in many cases, your bladder was already compromised before IC hit, we just could not feel it unil the "straw that broke the camals back" or "over the ledge" so to speak happend. Mine happend to be taking too many antibiotics that my body could not handle for IC to start, that, mixed with the combo of drinking a cup of coffee every morning that I did not ussually drink around this time, and also the fact that my body was tired of fighting an infection; so my immune system was compromised. There ya have it WHAM. and IC started...

So I really DO hope antibiotics work for you if thats the route you choose to take, but please know that they may be even more detrimental to your health in the long run...They never tell you the risks of being on long term antibiotics unfortunatly and YEAST is one of the real problems that can make IC much worse for some people.

ANyways needless to say I am not a Dr, but just someone who tried this route and was in even MORE pain afterwards having to clean up the mess the antibiotics did to my body. I truly beleive now that the antibiotics I was taking in the first place compromised my bladder lining and "pushed it over the ledge" so much so that I now have IC.

After I tried the antibiotics and the broth cultures, and EVERYTHING ELSE I could ( I even used BORIC ACID up my vagina) I do not reccommend this... lol I was at the end of my rope and the only thing left I had to try was sticking to the diet RELIGIOUSLY and elmiron.

So I am happy to say that now after 6 months of diet and elmiron, most days I have no symptoms at ALL or very little.

I think the thing was for me that I was SO determined to find a cause in relation the antibiotic route that I was further damaging the lining of my bladder and my body, as antibiotics suppress the immune system. I was convinced...stubborn and I wasn't allowing ANYTHING to heal.

Anyways, just wanted to tell you that yes it is insane and maddening and painful right now, but it CAN get better if you let your body heal.

I know with IC it is the ONLY condition we wish something was ACTUALLY wrong with us. Trust me I prayed for this ALOT. lol

Hope you get back to feeling the way you want!

      28 yrs old,

I have little to no problems now with my bladder, unless I am very stressed out, I forget to take Elmiron for a few days, or I eat or drink something that I know is a trigger...(i.e) like eating a tomato or drinking tea.... Took a long time to get here, but it IS possible to feel good again I just want people who are new to know that IT CAN get better, and for every one person who is suffering, there are hundreds of others who feel GREAT because they have control of thier IC.

What Works: Tylenol 3's, Pyridium, Elmiron (Going on 4 years now!) HOT showers!!!

Medications/ Vitamins: Elmiron-100mg 4x's daily Tylenol 3's/Advil (flaring) Vitamin D, WILD salmon oil 4x gels in the morning, Women's ONE a DAY multivitamin (the gummy kind doesn't make me flare) and PROBIOTICS!

My IC is different I have reason to believe I now have a yeast infection in the bladder. On Wednesday 9/10/2011 I went to the doctors because somehow I developed Thrush, he said Ive been on to many antibiotics which caused this. However, in all honesty I have not been on any antibiotics in 1 year. He gave me two pills of 150mg Diflucan. I next day I could already notice the Thrush improving and all my IC symptoms seemed to just have vanished. Its now Saturday and Im about 90 percent symptom free, I have never felt this great in months. And this morning I found out my girlfriend and her mother and father were being treated for a skin yeast infection... I believe I may have gotten a yeast infection from my gf during sex. I will tell my urologist the story and hopefully he can put me on some low dose long term Yeast medicine.

Atarax Elavil, and elmiron just suck the life outta me and I would rather pee 20+ times a day then take this stuff.

Quick update. I ran out of Diflucan and the next day the frequency came back big time. Tonight I am going to my doctor and will tell him my findings. I will also ask him if he can put me on Lamisil and nystatin. Lamisil is to treat a fungal toenail infection (4toes) that I had for about 10++ years, yes I did nothing about it and i've been thinking having a toenail infection that long of a time could of caused the fungus to spread to my bladder which caused the IC.

So im going to ask him for 12 weeks of lamisil and nystatin tablet form. I am hoping this will destroy the yeast/fungus that I am assuming is invading my body. I don't think it will hurt to try this before taking Elmiron for the rest of my life.

I dont think diflucan is safe for long term does anyone know? Cause if its ok, I'll use that instead of nystatin.

Be careful of the oral antifungal medicines.. they can be hard on your liver.

Hey, I know diflucan is not for long term use at all. Those types of meds can really damage your liver big time. I would say your best bet is to like you said get the diflucan or other fungal meds for 12 weeks or so, and then along with that go on a strict anti candida diet. Which means NO sugar, dairy, bread, vinegar, pasta etc. Yeast/ Candida is extremely hard to kill and completley eliminate... I know I had to do it when my bladder was first having trouble too.... I really do think that in alot of cases, yeast is the cause of IC because it eventually over grows so much, that it imbeds itself in our organs and reaks havoc.... In order to stop the overgrowth diet is ussually the only thing that makes a difference in the long term, and of course the antifungals.

Anyways, if your thinking that this is a yeast problem (which it sounds like it is) I would talk maby to a naturopath for sure and get some advice on making your body healthy and elmiminating yeast. There are also natural antifungals that you can take after you have completed the rounds of prescribed antifungals-- like oil of oregano and grape fruit seed extract. These are not so harsh on your body and they can help alot too with yeast!

Good luck, I hope you continue to feel better.
