  • Coming to a place of balance. In remission for over 5 months!

    Here is my remission story.

I will give you a little bit of my background. I ended up with pain in November of 2012. The pain was sudden and it brought me to my knees in tears. The pain continued, doctor's thought I had a UTI so I was prescribed antibiotics when I should not have been. I went to see a gynocologist who told me that my pain was just all in my head. (Which clearly it was not.) Then in February of 2013, I ended up in so much pain all I could do was lay in bed(for a week straight), until I finally made up my mind to go to the hospital. It was there that an ER Doctor said that she thought I had IC and pushed up my consultation with a urologist, who also thought I had IC. I believe that I was also dealing with vulvar vestibulitis, vulvodynia, as well as some other health aliments at the time. All of which have gone away!

While I was at home waiting to see the specialist I began searching on the internet for remission stories. It was on YouTube where I came across Sunny. Here is a link to show you the smoothie I started to drink daily. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dHvY...=TL9cFi-Pv65mw
She also has many other videos uploaded to show her healing journey.

So here is what I did to heal, I weaned myself off of the painkillers I was on. I was told to retrain my bladder by the urologist, so everyday I would try and wait a few minutes longer before using the washroom. I changed my diet to that of an alkaline one. I stuck to that green smoothie and I have to tell you every time I opened up a coconut I had the thought, " this is going to save your life".I also read Briza's thread on this forum and made note of what she has done. If you haven't already read her post, check it out!

More about my diet, I do not eat meat, on occasion I will have fish or eggs. I only eat quinoa and brown rice for grains. I found that I could have a submarine sandwich once a week without a flare, but now that I have read about how high amounts of sodium might cause autoimmune diseases I have decided to give up my fast food ways. I also have given up gluten. I no longer have anything with preservatives, no refined sugars, no salt unless it is sea salt, and I work really hard at staying alkaline. This helped me detox, I also went to a Naturopathic doctor who gave me homeopathic remedies that helped detox my organs. *** When I began my alkaline diet I avoided limes, lemons, and grapefruit. I introduced these fruits back into my diet after 3 months.

I made sure to stay positive every single day and to look for the good in life. I also made sure to reduce my stress, and to meditate. One of the most important changes I made was when I decided to love myself completely and unconditionally. My healing journey was difficult at times and having such a strong love for myself helped me move forward, as did the support from my friends and family.

When I was in one of the darkest places of my life, I found myself saying, " Fear cannot win out here, hope as to." I think it is important to hold onto hope and to try different healing modalities.

I wish all the best to everyone out there!

I'm glad this has had such a profound effect in your life and the treatment of your iC. Juicing is all the rage and there is no doubt how healthy those concoctions are. I take my hat off to you. Two years ago I quit smoking and lost 30 lbs., simultaneously. It took tremendous willpower and yet I have no doubt I do NOT have the willpower to ingest nothing but liquid. I may consider trying to have just one a day along with my regular IC diet but bananas and apples are a trigger for me.

Thanks for telling us your story. I'm very happy for you.

Lori--I don't see anywhere in her post that she is ingesting only liquids? Or juicing?

Leap of faith, can you clarify this? This is what I understood from your post:
          A daily green smoothie
No meat but occasional fish and eggs
          No fast food
Limits grains to brown rice and quinoa
          gluten free
          preservative free
          low sodium
          no refined sugars
          strives for alkaline diet
To me, drinking this "juice" along with just veggies and a grain or 2 would be impossible for ME. My take is it would be just as difficult as drinking all liquids. This was simply my interpretation of the diet and I'm sorry if my take on it wasn't accurate enough. I didn't criticize leap_of_faith but complimented her on her success. But thanks for pointing out my errors. It's always nice to have someone around to correct mistakes. :/

Thank you everyone for your response!

kimmalee - Thank you for the compliment. I was in a lot of pain earlier this year and as a result, I began distancing my mind from my body as a way to cope. I told my body that if it would be good to me, I would return the favour. Changing my diet was difficult but I have gained so very much from doing so. If you want to go gluten free and sugar free I believe that you can do it!

LoriSue - Thank you for your post. Congratulations on quitting smoking!! I actually want to start drinking green juices as soon as I can afford a juicer!! If you want to make that smoothie you do not need to add bananas or apples, instead you could add another piece of fruit. The important ingredients are celery and ginger as they help with reducing inflammation. The cucumber has a cooling effect. I incorporated this smoothie in my diet everyday for about 2 months. This smoothie is what took the pain away for me.

              Briza - Hello.
First, I would like to say thank you for posting your remission story! I found it to be inspirational.
Yes, you summarized my diet properly! I thought I would be able to edit my story later :/

Re: Coming to a place of balance. In remission for over 5 months!

I thought I would add an update to this thread.
*This is not medical advise.* I think one should consult with their doctor before making changes, especially if medication is involved.
Here is the healing approach I took:
                - slowly went off of medications
                - detoxed and alkalized the body. (80-90% alkaline diet to begin with and now more of a 50-60% alkaline diet)
                - eliminated refined sugar, processed foods, and fast food (allowed one fast food meal a week for three months and then eliminated it completely and eliminated gluten completely.)
                - removed meat, eggs, and cheese in the first stage of healing and then incorporated eggs, greek yoghurt, and goat cheese back into diet
                - drank green juices or smoothies everyday
                - exercised (only walking to begin with)
                - took in fresh air
                - loved myself
                - searched out different healing modalities – such as homeopathic remedies, meditation, reiki, ect.
                - found a job that I enjoyed, one where I could be creative and help others.
                - sought out remission stories - there are so many accounts of healing out there, like Joe Cross who has the documentary "Fat, sick & nearly dead", Dr. Lissa Rankin who has Ted Talks, and written the book " Mind over Medicine".
                - Found a health professional willing to listen and take time to help. Worked with naturopathic doctors and a family doctor who supported the naturopathic doctors decisions.

I'm always happy to hear that someone is doing well, but it's very important to remember that if something sounds to good to be true, it very probably is. I have looked at the web sites posted above and, even though some of the recommendations may have some merit, I also found some which are questionable at best. Please compare ingredients to items listed on the IC Diet Food List before trying them.

Thank you for your post Donna. I agree, not every recipe may be suitable. I thought perhaps these links would offer some meal plan ideas. Some substitutions could be made. I came to a place of healing by alkalizing my body, detoxing and by eating whole foods. It took multiple stages before I could eat the way I do now. I realize that we must consider individual differences. Thank you for highlighting this matter, I may have gotten ahead of myself. I started off only consuming bladder friendly foods and then expanded my options as I healed. To others out there, please do watch for your food triggers. We are all so very different. One of my triggers was chicken... I doubt I will ever eat chicken again!

Congratulations on your healing for this long of a time! I'm also still in remission ( 2 years now) and although we took different paths we both seemed to have found what may be good for our bodies, our minds, and our souls.

wow!! so happy for you. I'm trying to change my signature and take away all those medications I previously listed because I do not take any medications, and have not for a long time. I as well decided my body has the ability to heal, and I am doing so much better. I don't judge anyone for their treatment plan. I believe everyone should do what works for them. In my case I feel whole heartedly I can heal without medications. God bless everyone, and I pray each of you have a happy healthy NEW year!! xo
