    Hi all!

I haven't been on the board in a bit- have been in remission, thank God!

Here is something that I found helps me- and perhaps it will help some of you.

Over the past 3 years, I have had 2 major flares, and some smaller ones which I can control nicely with diet. Last year, my hubby had major colon surgery, he needed to be resected due to repeated Diverticulitis attacks- it was more of a quality of life thing, he basically could not eat anything without getting an attack every other month or so. While he had surgery, they did do a cath on him to make sure all was well. He started to complain about bladder pain about a month after the surgery- very similar to IC- so off to the Urologist we go! They checked him out and could not find anything wrong- I think he has some scar tissue in there regardless of what the doc said- and his colon surgeon told him he would get some twinges of pain on and off for a year out from surgery, totally normal.

In thinking about this more, and as his symptoms began to bug him more and sound like me, I began to think about the water we were drinking. Our water company was taken over by a new group a few months before my first attack- we are on city water. Sometimes, you can turn on the shower and smell chlorine coming out, yuck! So, as an experiment, began to buy bottled water to see if it made a difference.

It took about 2 weeks, but what a difference it made! Both of us felt so much better, and the symptoms went away. If I or my hubby tends to overdo caffeine or some other kind of no-no food(caffeine is a major trigger for both of us), start with just that little twinge feeling- we back off for a few days- drinks lots of filtered water and it goes away. Even the twinges are less and less- it mainly happens to me. I don't have that racking, severe pain that feels like someone broke all the bones in my pelvis and shoved them back up there.

I bought one of those filters that you attach to your water faucet and we only drink from that. I think that we were both reacting to the chlorine and fluoride that is in the water. I have always had issues with UTI and IC (often misdiagnosed as UTI- and took way too many antibiotics- developed an allergy to Sulfa) and all the cranberry that they pushed on me probably did some damage. IMO, hubby is sensitive now because of the cath- but he does much better than I do.

With my work, I am at my desk for long periods of time. I found that placing a soft pillow under my butt, and sitting properly had also helped a lot. Also found out that I have bursitis in my right hip, an I had an injection to help with the pain. It worked very well- and I think the combination of all these things just created the perfect storm in my body, so to speak.

I hope that this has helped some of you, and perhaps you can dial in a bit more as to what triggers flares- it might just very well be your water.

Take care and continued good health!

Hi Anne- It's great to hear that you and your husband are doing well. It gives the rest of us encouragement and hope. May I ask what kind of bottled water you drank? Also, are you on any meds at all or is your IC controlled strictly through diet?

      Re: Filtered Water

Glad you and your hubby are doing well. I have been drinking Evian bottled water for years now. I found It was the only one that did not irritate my bladder. I do not really like drinking bottled water per say but I do not want to drink the tap due to all the chemicals they add to it( lake Michigan water).

My guess is your hubby probably had some bacteria in his bladder due to the whole catheterization process when he had his surgery. I have heard people who came down with IC right after a surgery( which involved a catheter). There has to be a connection I would think.

In any event, I am happy you are both doing well.

        Re: Filtered Water

I was drinking Poland Springs- we also have that here in the office. Cant remember the name of the filter I have on the tap right now- I want to say Brita? When I am having a bad flare- I do the IC diet until things calm down and then some. I am on no meds right now- but have used Prosed in the past. If I feel a twinge coming on- I cut back totally on the no-no's- and I find that most times this works along with taking Naproxren for the pain, with a heating pad. I don't do a lot of the Naproxren- just enough to get me back to my old self.

          Re: Filtered Water

I doubled checked last night- I have a Pur water filter on the tap.

I should point out that stress plays a huge part (as we all know). In talking to my doctor- she did put me on a very light dosage of Prozac- but if you take Prosed- you have to wait at least 2 weeks before you start that- DO NOT TAKE PROSED AND PROZAC TOGETHER. It can cause a very serious condition called Serotonin Syndrome- and in some cases, can cause death. With any drug, please read all interactions- I know that there are a lot of no-no drugs with taking Prosed. I also do take some Pyridium as need for cramping

FYI- here is a great site that I found from drug interactions that is easy to use

            Re: Filtered Water

            Hi,
I agree that stress plays a role. My Dysautonomia started flaring with this! Thank goodness my Ibs hasn't yet... It did a few weeks ago but I caught it right away. PTL!

My hydro and cysto for dx isn't until 6/4 and F/U 6/10. I've been dealing w this since 12/2014 after a few normal infections, lots of antibiotics, Diflucan, all the specialists and a ton of misdiagnoses. My Urologist put me on Flomax? No clue if it works as it takes 4 weeks? I had to pay cash as its a "men's med". I too have tried my ibs Hyocysyme - it helps but I can only take it at night. It helps but They all drop my BP and raise my heart rate! My Uro keeps pushing a very expensive alkaline water a company gives samples and coupons out w a PH chart in his office - like a drug rep - $2.00 a bottle! Who can afford that? Not me!
