It's been years since I've had an instill, but I remember coming home after the first one and spending the evening with an ice pack between my legs - ouch! The nurse used a numbing gel, but I still was pretty sore after the first couple of times - probably because of tensing up too much. I don't remember it being a problem after I got used to them.

    Same experience here!

Did your doctor use a pediatric catheter? That helps along with the lidocaine. I also scheduled mine a week apart. The more instills I had done at the office, the easier it got. My urethra was always a bit irritated that night but it definitely got better with each instill. Good luck. Nine instillations really made a difference for me. I am still experiencing symptoms, but it certainly calmed things down! Good luck.

It is pretty normal to have pain from catheterization. Next time, ask them if they can use lidocaine jelly on your urethral area first. They can place the jelly and come back and do the instillation in a few minutes when the area is numbed up. This should reduce some of your discomfort.

Also, Katrina is right -- if your pelvic floor muscles are tight, catheterization is even more uncomfortable. Try to relax as much as possible for your next one.

hi Succermom! I am glad your bladder liked your rescue instillation that is great!

My guess is that either something with the cathder didn't agree with your or your having a pelvic floor Dysfunction reaction which was my problem with instillations too. Catheters aren't fun and the uncomfortableness can be enough to tighten up which can feel like it is happening at your urethra...I cannot tellt he difference from pain at my urethra or the muscles right above it usually even after years of this!

The pins and needles really sounds like it is pfd but it can't hurt to learn about some of the other possibilities too. Feel free to contact me if you ned to!

There are some ideas on these link to what else may be bothering you and what you can do. Alot of the problems are from not relaxing enough but

    1st Instillation.....uretha pain??? Normal??

I had my first instillation treatment today - heparin, lydocaine and sodium something or other. My bladder feels wonderful, unaware I even have a bladder today. My uretha on the other hand where they put the cathader in is VERY sore. Irritated, pins and needles...very uncomfortable. Is this normal?!?!?! I'm supposed to go for another instillation on Thursday, I don't know if I can handle another one!!!!!
Working...
