  • Autoimmune - Anyone Here On Steroids for Another Condition?

I've just been told to try 5 mg of Cortef (hydrocortisone) for another medical condition that they suspect could be autoimmune. That is a very low dose.

Is anyone on this forum taking steroids for another condition they have?

    Does its help the IC?
Diagnoses: Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (2012),Interstitial Cystitis (2003), Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia (2003), GERD (since ?), IBS (since ?), Low Blood Volume (2006), Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (2007)

    Medicines:
Claritin 10 mg/AM for MCAS and allergies
    Synthroid
Aciphex 20 mg in PM for GERD
Zantac 75 mg, one at night for MCAS and GERD
Singulair 10 mg in AM, for MCAS & allergies
Zyrtec 5 mg/PM for MCAS and allergies

    Non-Medicinal Helps:
    glucosamine 500mg/MSM 500mg 2 X/day
I avoid foods that I react to in my esophagus, bowel and bladder, and I react to many things. It is an imperfect method, but it is all that I do at the moment.

I've been taking prednisone for about 18 years for lupus. Most of the time I'm on a minimal dosage (2.5 mg) but have occasionally needed to crank up the dosage briefly (and then immediately start to taper down) when my lupus would flare.

Does it help the IC to be on 2.5 or 5 mg of prednisone?

I'm finishing up a second round of prednisone for what seems to be Lupus symptoms. It helps my IC, and generally helps my all over body pain. The first round really did seem to help more than this second one, and I'm seeing more side effects now that I've been on it longer.
        *IC-- Summer 2004; PFD--October 2005
        *Fibro--Fall 2000; CFS-- Fall 2000
        *MPS--Fall 2000; Crohn's disease-- 1997*IBS,GERD, *Migraines, hypothyroidism, GYN problems *Degenerative Disc Disease/scoliosis

        Total Abdominal Hysterectomy--adenomyosis--9\08

04/17/09 Crohn's disease almost killed me with a combo of extreme constipation from pain medications. My bowel ruptured, I almost died from peritonitis and spent several days in the ICU then more in a private room on the floor. If you have any questions about severe constipation from pain meds please don't hesitate to send me a message.

I mentioned to my one urogyne last year that maybe I should be put on steroids thinking this is all autoimmune. He did not go for that idea saying that steroids can cause alot of serious health issues. I at least thought he should have given me a short trial of them just to see if they would help.
Did you get any relief from your IC while on the steroids?
