  • hydrodistention

I finally got hold of my doctor and he is doing a hydro with a biopsy early this week. I had a hydro last year when he removed one of my kidney stones and he told me no IC was present. Can it develop in that time? I think he is wondering too. So many, many years of frequency (to the point of embarrassment) and now the urgency. He said he has never had an IC patient whose symptoms came and went like mine; urgency, then relief, then re-emergence of urgency a year later. My question: I don't recall anything about the hydro issue since I was in pain following the Kidney stone removal last year. Will there be pain? I won't have retention problems will I? I have a terror of catheters...small urethra, so those things hurt like crazy, even the small ones. This is not the best condition for someone with a catheter phobia. Have most of your experiences with hydro's been benign? Any relief from them? Sorry to have so many questions, I am just blown away by this misery.

    Hi nogo,
You wont even feel the catheter till the anethesia wears off.Unfortunetly they may have to leave the catheter in for a week after the biopsy.Thats up to your doctor though. The ic can only be revealed with the hydro. You may have what they call hunners ulcers. The procedure isnt really that bad.Its afterwards.Make sure they give some bladder pain killers afterward.I dont believe the ic really goes away.It depends on your diet and how much water you drink to flush the bladder out.Having stones leads me to believe you need to drink more water.Has the doctor told you what kind of stones you had? There are different kinds of stones. You could alter your diet depending on what kind they are. Some people cant drink ice tea if their susceptable to stones.
    Hope your feeling better.

My doctor normally keeps me in the hospital overnight following a hydro. By the time I go home the following day, I feel pretty good. It does take a little time to recover completely. I have an appointment with my uro next week and will probably schedule a hydro then.

It was rough the first couple weeks but it worked like a charm for me. It's been six months and I am about to have another so I hope I get the same result.

Wow now I'm getting into a panic. I will have another HYDRO this month. I had a hysterectomy a year ago and woke up with a catheter in me. I really thought I would die from that pain. After a big drama and much complaing they finally gave me major pain meds and I went to sleep deeply. If I wake up with a cath. in me I will take it out and leave the hospital if I have to crawl out of there. With previous Hydros which was day surgery I woke up needing to void. I couldn't go on a bed pan and begged the nurse to help me to the bathroom. Once there I had no trouble relieving myself. The Doctor gave me some pain pills and sent me home. I felt much better soon after. Someone please tell me I can expect the same this time. I really feel I'm experiencing post traumatic symdrome. My bladder is at it's worse and I think I need the HYDRO and that it is the only thing that will help me. Hugs, Ziggy

Most hydrodistentions are now being done in day surgery. Since my hydro back in 2007 when I posted on this thread, I have had several in an outpatient surgery center. If you're concerned about the catheter, by all means telephone your doctor's office and ask. I prefer having a catheter overnight and I have to be sure I ask beforehand.
