  • New here and just diagnosed with IC...problem-painful intercourse.

Hi everyone. I’m new here and new to IC. I’ve read a couple different posts here and I wonder if anyone is like me.

I’m Cindy, married to Jason for 6+yrs. We have 2 sons, Erik is 4.5 and Jack is 15m. We live in NWPA. I’m a SAHM and a student. Both my husband and I start Nursing School in August.

It all started a couple years ago. Intercourse started to become painful. It would “poke”. I dealt with it for a while thinking it wasn’t anything. Time went on and I finally went to the dr. They did an u/s and saw nothing wrong so no reason for the pain. I’ve had one counselor tell me it’s probably in my head…so I started to think that. (after all I was in counseling for a sexual reason) I switched Dr’s during my last pregnancy. I had another u/s at this Dr and of course they found nothing. At my last yearly I talked to the Dr and she said it was just my body. :O

So I call to make my appointment for this years yearly and I ask for a different person. They schedule me before my yrly to discuss the pain. I went in May 18th for my appointment. She said that since everyone else has thought INSIDE the vagina she was going to think OUTSIDE the vagina. I filled out this survey paper and she said based on that she thinks I might have IC but she wanted to do one last thing to see. So I got my 1st catheter put in right at the DR office. She said she was going to put 2 different things in my bladder and I was to tell her if I felt like I had to pee and if it hurt. 1st one I felt nothing (turns out it was water and I shouldn’t have felt anything). 2nd one was Potassium (K+) and almost instantly I felt pain. It wasn’t a real bad pain but a “get it out NOW!” kind of pain. She said that I did indeed have IC. So she put something else in my bladder and said that it should put a coating around my bladder. I was told to go home and in a day or so have sex. We waited a day then had sex and it didn’t hurt! A couple days later we tried again all excited that this was it and the pain was back. So now I had to figure out what was causing the IC.

I was told to eliminate a lot of things out of my diet. I tried but failed. I read the papers she gave me and decided to look around online. 2 of the things that can mess with IC that popped out to me from when the pain started were vitamins (we were TTC) and wheat (we were trying to eat healthier). I’ve only experimented with the wheat. But I did eliminate both of them from my diet. I’ve added wheat bread and wheat pasta back in and each time I do, the pain is back. As early as 6hrs we noticed a difference. So I’m keeping wheat out of my diet and soon will bring vitamins back in to see if they do anything. (I’d like to take my prenatal vitamins still b/c I’m nursing the baby)

So there is my intro and my “story”. If I can find for sure that it is the wheat causing the problems and that it’s that easy of a fix then I’m sure I’m lucky. It’s been going on for a few years and I know that’s nothing compared to some of you but sex IS a big part of a marriage and I was to the point where I hated it and felt that I deserved the pain. And my view of my husband was changing also. So this is HUGE for us.

Have you tried lubrication? I have read that their are some people that go to physical therapy because they also have pelvic floor dysfunction along with IC and they are tensing their muscles during intercourse without meaning to. I do experience some amount of pain with sex also. You should try different positions. I have heard that some positions don't hurt as badly as others. For example, missionary tends to allow him to "touch" your bladder more than say you spooning. I am still trying to figure everything out as well. We have not been having sex very much because I keep getting yeast infections and I just got over a case of the bumps. Apparently I am allergic to Charmin. Who knew? Maybe someone else on the boards can help you with some of their opinions.

Hi KristiV. Trust me, I've tried everything. It's not a lube problem either, it pokes and pokes. I thought for a while it was my cervix or something that he was hitting. Positions, tried them all! They all hurt. I'm hoping it's as simple as cutting out wheat. We will see. *fingers crossed*

Have you discussed this with your doctor? Have you asked him about endometriosis?

Of course I have discussed it with my DR. I have mentioned Endo as I was scheduled for a LAP right before I got PG with my youngest to check for endo. My Dr said that many people have endo and IC.

I don't think it is endo that is causing my problems as it's just intercourse problems and the pain goes away when she puts the numbing into my bladder and when I don't eat wheat.

I don't know for sure though.

I feel for you! I too have painful sex. Have you tried taking pain medication and a warm bath before sex? I ALWAYS take pain medication about 30 minutes before sex. Also, be sure to urinate w/in 30minutes after sex so that you don't get an infection and also try a heating pad afterwards. --Kathy

              Hiya!

The only thing that has ever worked for me is pain meds. I take a Vicoden about 30 mins before sex (but sometimes it's hard to time and I end up in pain till it kicks in, oh well.) But since you're nursing a baby, I don't know if you would be able to take this. I've also heard that muscle relaxers can really help if you have pelvic floor dysfunction and are inadvertently clenching your muscles down there...but again, nursing the baby.

Defintely talk to your doctor about pain management, I wish I could say that I thought taking a few things out of your diet would help, but it isn't likely that it will be that simple. (If it is however, that would be wonderful!)

I know where you're coming from, hubby only got to be romantic with me...once every 2 months or so until I got my pain meds and boy is it not fun!

I hope you find something that works for you!

              Kitty!

I'm all to familar with that poking pain. The only thing that helped me was pain meds like others said 30 mins. before and using the heating pad for a little while afterwards. It stinks having to do this but It sure makes life easier when you can have sex without pain. It is very hard on your relationship, our hubbies need to be as patient as they can be. I found having my husband read some of the things everyone here has to say made him look at things quite differently. Good Luck
