Well, I HAVE given up meat and fish, and dairy .... pretty much. Never say never. Now I have those things rarely, instead of on a daily basis. I'm going to improvement, not perfection. It's all a choice. I do feel better with these changes. Oh, it helps to like beans, since we IC folks don't generally do too well with soy. Actually, with these dietary changes, I'm hoping to heal enough that I will eventually be able to tolerate soy.

    Good luck.

A few people told me i should try the Vegan diet lifestyle. I don't know if I could give up meats completely. How did you do it?

Hi, I haven't tried this but I am on Dr St Amand's low carb diet for fibromyalgia. I've found it difficult to combine low carb with the IC diet, & am eating an awful lot of oats, cheese and lettuce. I don't eat any of the commercial low carb foods, & can't take even the tiniest bit of malitol sweetener without a tummy upset.

However I am losing weight steadily, feel OK & my IC hasn't flared any more than usual on it. The best thing is that I'm not hungry & all the carb cravings caused by Elavil/Amitriptylene have gone. I guess my blood sugar level is now steady.

Good luck with your diet Zygala87!

I did South Beach which is also a low carb diet, but less restrictive and had very nice results with it.

I did the diet for a short time. I lost some weight, but switched back to a weight watchers like diet. Lots of fruit, veggie and whole wheat breads/pastas. I did flare up from all the ketones from atkins.

Our doctor told us the diet is okay if you stick with it 100% --- it you cheat, even occasionally, your cholesterol level will shoot up very quickly.

Well, the major problem I have with the diet is that it can caues protein to be built up in your urine. Some are acidic and some are basic (others are neutral). I just wouldn't want to play with fire and find out if that bothers me. The other thing is that it is very hard on the kidneys (the Atkin's diet). A lot of people say a diet, even an unhealthy one, is ok for a little while, but then it will become dangerous to continue. I'd also fear ketoacidosis (but that is hard core protein and practically zero carbs). Personally, I don't trust the diet. I think South Beach is more reasonable or the glycemic index diet (so that way you are getting some healthy grains).

Good luck though. I had a friend who did it when she was in the ROTC in school. She did that to lose 10-15 pounds every weigh in (she was happier to be slightly heavy and eat favorite foods). The thing she complained about the most was how often she had to urinate. She would wake up all night long to urinate because at first, you lose a ton of water weight on that diet.

I did try this a while back, but I found the changes the diet made to my urine pH and composition caused my IC to become worse, so I discontinued the diet and revamped my weight loss strategy (recently lost 10 lbs on the new plan).

However, everyone responds differently to this diet, and if it's okay for you in that respect you could continue for a while

I guess I just don't like the idea of such high fat, high cholesterol foods in massive doses... and there have been reports that women who try this diet end up not sticking to it and gaining the weight back. But again, that doesn't apply to everyone, and you may not!

    Good luck...

    Low Carb diet?

Hello. Has anyone else tried Dr. Atkins low-carb diet? I have loss 10 pounds in two weeks but I do not want to hurt my health more then it is already. I only have 10 more pounds to lose and I think I will feel better about myself. I also want to get back into my cloths which are very tight on me now. Since meat and eggs are ok for the IC diet I thought I would try it. My health comes first and so far I have not noticed anything abnormal. I would like to know if this diet has hurt anyone in anyway. Ziggy
