  • Pain in Sides

Hi I'm new to all this, I just got diagnosed last Friday. I have had pain in my right side that's been really bad for the last five years then last year it started in my left side as well. Had anyone else with IC experienced that. Is that where people with IC usually feel the pain? In the lower sides (half in my pelvic area, half in my abdominal area), it's never been in the middle.

    Thanks!
    Emily Anne

Had abdominal pain since I was 12 that started getting much more severe when I entered college. I just got diagnosed in February 2011.

    Medications:
    Elmiron (100mg) 3x/day
    Prelief

    Diagnosis:
Severe IC, Bladder which holds 300 mg rather than the normal 600 mg, Pelvic Floor Myalgia, Imperforate Hymen (surgery in 2008), Ovarian Cysts

    Treatments:
Heating pad/rice sock, laying down when in pain, rescue IC diet

I have not read of this type of pain before but each of us are so different it hits us all in strange ways. Please talk with your Doctor. There maybe somthing else going on. Let us know how thing go. Hugs, Ziggy

Have to agree with Ziggy, you need to discuss this with your doctor. Never heard of bilateral pain like that. Are you really tensing up? Sometimes people compensate with their pain and cause more pain, like if you had a sprained ankle, it could cause back pain because you are using different muscles and overcompensating. And yes, please speak with your doc and make sure there is nothing else going on. If it was bilateral back pain you may want him/her to check your kidney function. Just a thought. Hope you get to the bottom of it and feel better soon. Jill, wife of Bob

It's not unusual for IC pain to be in the sides. Mine is pretty much like a menstrual cramp, but more painful.

I have read alot of ICers do have pain more on one side then the other. The only time I get pains like you describe is from my IBS, sometimes after I have a BM or before I will get pain on my right side. Do you have IBS?

No I don't have IBS that I know of. My pain is cyclical too, so it gets worse during ovulation and my period. I got the cystoscopy with hydrodistenstion and that's how they diagnosed me with IC (so I guess I definitely have it?). I wonder if once again I have something else as well... since I also had cysts, an imperforate hymen and pelvic floor myalgia. My symptoms seem to fit really well with IC though because I have cyclical pain, frequency to urinate (however that comes also from the fact that my bladder is half the size as normal bladders), I've thought for years that I was allergic to chocolate because it would always make my pain worse etc.

            I'm confused now.

I just threw that out there. You have alot going on any of which could contribute to your right sided pain. I did in fact read some ICers experience their pain more on one side then the other.

My pain is the right side (kidney area), and the right side of my pelvis. Sometimes it occurs in the center, but it is primarily on the right side. Always made it fun going to the ER since they assumed it was my appendix!

You still may want to talk to your doctor about it. Everyone is different, and sometimes those pains can be muscular also. Some of my pain is from my PFD, when my IC gets crazy.

That's exactly what my pain is like and it started like that on the left side about a year ago. While I'm not glad you have the pain, I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only with pain there. That makes me more convinced of my IC diagnosis being what's causing the pain.

Always made it fun going to the ER since they assumed it was my appendix.

I totally agree. That definitely happened to me. And there were so many times that I considered going for appendicitis because it hurt so badly.

I have a post op appointment with my doctor coming up soon, so I will talk to him about these things, but I'm feeling much better about it now!

                    Thanks everyone!

It is a weird pain. Mostly they really assumed it was ovarian cysts, especially since the pain was primarily with my cycles. After many ER visits it was shown that there were no cysts, my appendix was good, and I may have a UTI. I actually have had that pain since I was 17 and a half years old. I started with the pelvic pain, and that led to my first ER visit for it. They only checked for appendix and that was it. Made me really angry.

I always have had the right kidney pain, and that I always associated with drinking too much pop, so I would cut back and the pain would get better. That pain is usually associated with diet. It is kind of odd since it wraps around to the front. I have had OCCASIONAL left side pelvic pain, but it is primarily right side. I have never had left side flank pain though.

                      Hope you are getting better!

My pain is in both of my sides. It is on the right side mostly, but the left side hurts sometimes too. Also, my Uro told me that though I sometimes feel pain in the kidney area, it is really not the kidneys. It is actually just referred pain from the IC. I also feel like I haven't emptied all the way sometimes. That is a pretty common symptom.

I know it's been about a week since you posted but I'm not here, also recently diagnosed. I have the lower back and lower front/abdomenal pain as well but on my left side. That's why I was misdiagnosed with kidney stones for months. It's so frustrating. My pain started again over the past couple days and has gotten worse today as the day has gone on. I'm actually seriously considering going to Urgent Care tomorrow because it's getting unbearable. So sorry to hear that we all have so many symptoms!!

                            I have

I have always had the pain on the right side. It is always mistaken for cysts on my ovaries as well as for appendicitis, I have had one ovary and my appendix out.
I have this pain since I was a teenager and was told that because it goes side to side it was all in my head.
If your pain is new or different I agree get it checked. It isnt good to assume all the pain you have in your bladder area and back are IC related. So please dont think that any question you have not important and that is why we are here to help each other...

That makes sense. It could very well be that for me. That's where my pain has always been. I'm getting more on board with the fact that the pain is from IC, especially after reading what everyone has written on here.
