  • Over the counter Pain meds

    Hey everyone,

My name is Tiffany and I was just diagnosed with IC on March 16th 2011. I've been spending quite a bit time on this board learning things.

Although I am on elavil, I also normally take ibuprofen and Tylenol throughout the day. Now that I know acid is a BIG IC irritant, I am just wondering if ibuprofen or Tylenol has acid that could cause a flare?

If this is the case, in your experience, which over-the-counter pain meds do not have acid issues?

I apologize if this isn't the appropriate place for this post, I just couldn't find a "pain" sub-forum.

    Thanks for your help,

Ibuprofen is a problem for many ICers, including me. I can tale tylenol with no problem; just be sure you don't exceed recommended dosage.

    Stay safe

      Hello new person

I am sorry to hear you are newly diagnosed with IC but welcome and I must admit you are smart to ask about Ibuprofen and Tylenol. One of the problems with Tylenol is that it can cause liver damage and Ibuprofen can cause problems with the GI tract. Might I suggest before you take anything now that you are on the road to IC that you always research, research, research anything you read or hear from anyone and a good place to start is the FDA page:

Just a suggestion. They do have all kinds of information available tho and if they don't have it you can Google it and find out. I am so adament about finding out about drugs and the effects they can have on a person because I have a compromised liver and take very few medicines by mouth. I won't even take Elmiron by mouth but prefer the instillations. Maybe I overdo it too much by waving my PLEASE BEWARE banner but I was an ER nurse for 12 of my many years of nursing and saw too many accidental overdoses of the innocent uses of Tylenol and know it can happen.
