Anyone have any good tips for managing nausea that comes from the medications we need to use? I'm new to the 'bladder meds' and would really appreciate any tips anyone has to offer as to how they manage some of the nausea.

What are you on? One of the IC drugs is an antihistamine called hydroxyzine, which has antiemetic (nausea) properties used to offset the effects of opioids.
Hydroxyzine is used primarily as an antihistamine for the treatment of itching, allergies, hyperalgesia, motion sickness-induced nausea, and insomnia, as well as notably for the treatment of mild anxiety.[2] Even though it is an effective sedative, hypnotic, analgesic, and tranquilizer, it shares almost none of the abuse, dependence, addiction, and toxicity potential of other drugs used for the same range of therapeutic reasons.[citation needed]
Hydroxyzine is used with opioid analgesics to increase the pain-killing ability of a given dose of opioid, reduce the quantity needed to stop a given level of pain, and/or preempt some side effects of opioids like itching, nausea, and vomiting.Mom to two littles (remissions while pregnant/breastfeeding)

The anti cholinergic meds for bladder spasms can sometimes make me nauseous due to the delayed gastric emptying they can cause. They really stop my bladder spasms, so I would really hate to discontinue them. I am due to pick up the atarax script today, so hopefully that may help. Thanks

What meds are your on?
Hi Earth Lady,
What medications are you on? I was experiencing really bad nausea and increased pain in my belly area about 3 weeks ago. After my Uro. had me get a CT scan and the results came back fine, my Uro. referred me to a gastro. doctor. Before my scheduled appt. with the gastro. I found some great info. on this forum and determined in my case that the Elmiron was causing my problem. I read that one of the ladies was having the same trouble and her doctor told her to open the capsule and mix the contents in 1 tablespoon of pear baby food then drink the glass of water as instructed. Also another lady told me to eat a small snack an hour after taking the Elmiron if it is not time for a regular meal. Boy this has really done the trick for me. I was able to cancel my gastro. appt.I have been on Elmiron for 4 months. I also started taking Pepcid AC 20 mg. twice a day and am doing so much better with my IC and don't have the nausea. I hope maybe this will be helpful to you. God Bless.

I'm not on the Elmiron yet but I may be shortly so it's good to know for the future. My dr. did mention that since I'm so sensitive to meds that if or when I do go on the Elmiron I will most probably need to take it with food, so the tip to mix it with pear baby food is good to know. Thanks
Right now I am on Gelnique transdermal gel and it works really really well for me for the bladder spasms with no dry mouth or constipation but----- I am getting some nausea from it. All the anticholinergics do this to me to some degree. Darn.

I take Phenergan for nausea which works well but knocks me out. I rather be woozy than sick. I found out that if I don't have a snack or crackers before my dose of doxycycline or Urelle I'm nauseated and have horrible stomach pains/cramps. Eating with the meds has helped a lot. The Urelle has helped a lot so now I'm only urinating every hour instead of every 5-15mins. I'm starting Miralax for the constipation issue with it. I don't mind the dry mouth. I hope you find something that not only helps but doesn't make you sick. Also what is Gelnique? I never heard of that.

I finally got a hold of my doctor to tell him I wanted to try the gelnique for a month. I am excited to try it, (well as much as you can be about taking a medicine) because the vesicare really dries me out and I already have chronic dry eye syndrome and it makes it worse. I stretch out the vesicare to 36 hrs so it won't be as drying but then it doesn't work as well. I'll start on the gelnique tomorrow. I am wondering about the 10mg transdermal delivery, I used to take the 5mg pills which were enough but I have to say when I used the oxytrol patch it only delivered 5mg and I felt it stopped the spasms but barely did a thing for the frequency so maybe this will work better. I'm glad you mentioned it as I knew about the patch but not about the gelnique. I'm also glad I'm going to try it as it will get rid of the constipating effects since it bypasses the digestive system. I've been having to take alot of magnesium to offset this effect.
Also, I don't know if taking food when you put the gel on will help because its delivered over 24 hours, at least thats what my patient pamphlet says.Cindi

Also, I meant to mention that taking pepcid or omeprazole with a medicine will often get rid of the nausea effects from those medicines. I don't know why it works that way as they are given for GERD but I have always found this to be true, just a generally calming effect they have on the stomach.Cindi

So the gel is delivered over a certain amount of time like the extended release pill? If it is then I guess using it on a full stomach wouldn't help. -huh I use half the gel packet because the full packet is too much for me. That's the only dose it comes in, so I cut it in half. The gel doesn't dry up if the pack is closed up tight.

For mild nausea, I nibble saltines throughout the day, or eat "Ginger People: ginger candies". I also am very careful to take my IC meds with a snack, otherwise I'm not able to keep them down, which would waste the whole purpose of taking them.Kadi
