Has anyone gotten any advice that candida may play a role in IC symptoms? I feel very strongly that I may have leaky gut syndrome and don't know what is the safest IC route in getting rid of the candida completely - roots and all.
Diagnosed w/ IC 12/2010. 3 small kidney stones removed in May of 2011.

Currently taking: Elmiron (3 times a day-pour capsule into about 4 oz. of water and drink it down (with a little food on my stomach first), Valium (an eighth to a fourth of a pill as needed (rarely need this anymore), and Curelle Probiotics -one a day in the morning on an empty stomach.

Tried: Urelle, Prelief, Oxybutynin, Urogesic Blue, antihistamines, nuerotin, flomax, vesicare, enablex, cystoprotek, prozac, quercetin w/ bromelaine, marshmellow root tea, garlic pills, fish oil, magnesium, Vitamin D-3, Boron, B-12 w/ Folic Acid drops. Homeopathic allergy shots for food and inhalents.

**Elmiron and Culturelle Probiotic have helped me get a better quality of life. I've been on the Elmiron for 6 months so far and am feeling so much better and can eat and drink so much more!

**I love the ICN - it has been a blessing in the midst of this evil curse!!!

Ive read the book "The Yeast connection" and there is info in there about IC and yeast. About 6 years ago my chiropractor told me that I probably had systemic yeast and that was causing many of my symptoms at the time such as, extreme fatigue, indigestion, headaches, muscle aches and weakness, dizziness. It got so bad that I could barely drive or function. Surprisingly, I didnt have a flare at the time of IC. I cut out most sugar in my diet and slowly but surely started to feel better. Im trying to cut back on sugary foods now to reduce the risk of systemic yeast again. I think it could possibly help us with some of our symptoms especially if you have other problems besides the IC.
Diagnosed with IC in 1997. Currently taking Elmiron, Hydroxizine, Aleve, Ditropan, Glucosamine, Chondroiten, MSM Quercitin, Vitamin D, Probiotics, Co-Q 10. Also working on bladder retraining

Hey Becky! Thank you so much for your reply! I just ordered the book "The Yeast Connection" on line yesterday and it is supposed to arrive tomorrow. I am so excited to hear that there is info in there about IC. The fact that I have all of a sudden come down with numerous food allergies along w/ these IC symptoms (all around the same time) makes me sooo hopeful that this may be the missing piece to my puzzle. I have had fatigue, heart palpitations, a daily off and on sore throat, muscle twitches and most of all am all of a sudden sensitive to chemicals and smells also to the cold.

At this point I'd literally eat dirt for every meal if it were going to make me better.

Are you having a flare now? If so how long have you been having it? My main concern w/ candida and leaky gut (which I feel is very likely at least a part of what I have going on) is how in the world to get rid of the roots the yeast burrow down into your intestines. I am nervous about going to just anyway to treat me for Candida as most doctors aren't familiar w/ IC and I do believe I can't take just anything and especially can't stay on things for long periods of times. I hope the book will shed some light on this. I also booked myself an apt. with Diana here on the IC network for counseling. I have been so lost for finding a right path on this and don't want to go to the wrong person and end up worse off than I am now.

Hello again, I am in a flare right now for a little over a week now. I think it may have something to do with me being pre-menopausal. Im 49 and have been having some irregular cycles. I was also eating lots of sugary junk food for the last couple years so may be having issues with yeast again myself. Have you taken antibiotics in the past few years? Often thats where yeast begins. The antibiotics kill off the good bacteria and if its not replaced with probiotics it allows yeast to overgrow. Many practicioners will treat with Diflucan (if you can get them to believe in you, I havent as of yet) My chiropractor wanted me to take something called Tanelbit but I was worried that it would irritate my bladder as it says it has tannins which can be irritating. I think just staying away from sugar and white flour will help to get rid of the yeast. It may take awhile but it does help

          Hey Becky!

I feel like I POSSIBLY have had a serious break through since Friday. I am reading the book The Yeast Connection by William Crook.

To give you a quick history this (urgency, frequency, burning and bladders sensitivity) started in the form of what I think was possibly a bladder infection in September of last year - I was out of town so took an OTC test and it showed positive for Leukocytes. I had my GP call me in an antibiotic. The symptoms cleared up with in a couple of days.

November of 2010 the exact same thing happened - again I took an OTC test I had on hand and couldn't get to my doctor - had her call me in an antibiotic (regret this now). The symptoms cleared up within a couple days.

December 23, 2010 I thought I had another UTI. This time I went to a Doctor's Care - the in house test came back positive. The culture came back negative. They referred me to my OBGYN - their in house test showed negative and they sent me to a Urologist. I never had another negative in office test from then on yet had all of the symptoms. He tried several over active bladder meds on me and a couple of things that are used to treat IC - neurotin, an antihistamine (can't remember the name) and Urelle. He suggested Elmiron but I held off on that b/c I had planned on getting pregnant again (by now) until this so I didn't want to go on something that wasn't a cure - and could not be taken during pregnancy.

None of the prescription drugs helped and I was very sensitive to the medications - more so than I normally am - which I tought was odd.

Meanwhile - pollen season started here and I continued to take my usually allegra for this.

I started googling the heck out of IC and anything potentially related. I found a website that promoted Catherine ****** and her book "Along The Healing Path". I bought the book and read it and began researching more based on her suggestions. I was skeptical of the book since everyone says there is no cure. (which I still believe there may not be)

In all of my research from then to now my belief in my case is that I have for some reason had an overgrowth of candida yeast in my intestines. Which I believe triggered food allergies and food sensitivities as well as cystitus in my bladder. I started going to Dr. Allan Leiberman here in Charleston, SC. He is an environmental specialist who treats as naturally as possible only prescribing meds if absolutely necessary. I found that I was allergic to numerous foods (all of a sudden at the age of 34 - I had no food allergies prior to now and did not know I was experiencing food allergies) including wheat, corn, potatoes, peanuts and many many more but those first few were bad enough allergies that I can't treat those w/ allergy neutralizing shots - I have to actually avoid those foods.

Fast forward to today. Friday I was very very frustrating - I was experiencing significant burning again and felt like there was no hope. With the allergy shots you have to take 1 a day for 10 days in a row then you can go to twice a week. I finished the 10th shot on Saturday. I still was having burning but found if I ate rice, milk products or drank my low acid coffee I would sneeze and my throat would start hurting. I believe that b/c I had a space in time where I tested for the first set of foods and then went back and tested for the next set that (during that time I continued to eat everything daily) I became more allergic to the things I had tested positive to. They have a scale of 2-9 I believe. If you are a 5 or above you have to avoid that food. If you are a 4 then you should not eat that food more than 4 days in a row. Me being a coffee fanatic still drank the coffee every day and being that I couldn't have potato, corn or wheat for at least 30 days left me with rice - which I tested at a 3. I ate rice daily - I think if I eliminate rice and coffee and milk then I may be able to get rid of this burning. My guess is my allergic response is causing histamines to be released in the bladder causing it to be inflamed and burn. When I backed off of these things this weekends I actually had several hours through out the day that I felt better than I have felt in months.

Meanwhile I also have been suffering w/ heart palpitations from time to time (heart checked out perfectly fine), pain/tightness in my chest which seemed to be triggered by stress or the after math of a stressful day/situation. Also I have had some ear pain but no infection, fatigue yet I am not sick and at times the fatigue was siginificant. Also constipation, gas and muscle twitches or pain in my abdomen and mouth ulcers that lingered. I have now learned since started to read the book "The Yeast Connection" that this is all likely from the candida yeast over growth. When I initially went to Dr. Leiberman I had just read Catherine ******'s book and he put me on a Candida diet along with Diflucan and . He did not give me much guidance but a hand out telling basically what to eat and not to eat for how long and the hand out said to read "The Yeast Connection". I did not run out and buy the book and read it then. I should have. All of this was going on at once (testing for allergies, doing the candida diet - I had no idea it was all related). I even stopped taking the Nystatin b/c I couldn't figure out what was causing the burning. I have an apt. w/ Dr. Leiberman this Thursday. I am going to stop drinking coffee and eating rice and see if I can get these symptoms to completely go away. I also am going to get back on a candida eradication diet. It seems like the candida will always be there but can be controlled as long as my immune system isn't compromised. At this level I know it is so I may have to do some form of this diet for a while - while also building back up my immune system-which can take time. I think you are very likely right about yourself and the sugar. It seems like we will always have to be careful unless there becomes a way in the future to totally get rid of candida. Good luck to you and don't give up!

Im so glad to hear that you feel that youre on the right path I do think that systemic yeast can cause so many symptoms and that it can take a very long time to get our bodies into a more natural state. So many foods have additives and preservatives and its hard to figure out what is ok to eat and what can harm us. Im trying to stay away from sugar and alot of white flour things in hopes that my flare will get under control. Its great that youve found a practicioner that will work with you on the yeast issues. Ive not found one except for my chiropractor and he cant prescribe diflucan or nystatin pills

Hey! I have been struggling w/ doctors and help here and I am happy w/ the environmental specialist here but he does not know a lot about IC and what's okay and not okay for IC so I am leary. I do have to report that last week I purchased a 30 minute counseling consult w/ Diana here on the ICN. I just finished the consult with her and she was wonderful. She helped me fill in the holes that I was missing due to the environmental specialist not knowing a lot about IC. She also outlined every issue she believes I am having and gave me a lot of great advice on diet and supplements she thinks will help. She looks at the body over all and assesses where you are at and what you have done thus for then tells you what she thinks can help you from there. I have researched this so much that I knew about a lot of what she told me but there are so many products out there that I didn't know which ones to go for so I was left w/ a lot of knowledge and no where to go. She has helped me be able to have direction. Also anything the specialists tells me I can take the advice to her and have it IC tweaked if you will so that I can get the most out of my medical treatment and not be thrown into something that may not be good for IC. I'd highly recommend it. It is truly the best $45 I've ever spent.

PS She reccomends rotating all nature remedies and not to take Nystatin or Dyflucan. I think the Nystatin was bothering me so I had stopped taking it. I prefer the natural way myself but didn't know which products to buy. She gave me names of several. She has IC herself and had yeast for over 30 years. It took a long time but she is now yeast free. I really think finding the right help is the key to this thing. I hope you can get good help. This thing can be so frustrating. 3 steps forward - then 2 steps back.
