  • Possible IC

My urologist is treating me for IC, but is hesitant to actually give me the diagnosis. I've had symptoms for years now, but I didn't get referred to a specialist until this year. Its gotten bad enough I can't attend class and don't make it out of the house very often. I wasn't working because graduate school had gotten too demanding. Now I don't know how I am going to afford all the medication that the specialist has me on. I am feeling very overwhelmed at the moment! Between the new costs, the diet and the unknowns I am going crazy. Is there usually a transition period at the beginning when you first start medication and relief enough to rejoin the world? I hate the thought that my dreams to get my masters and support my daughter is over... Any ideas on the "typical" time it takes to get the IC under control?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the ICN

I think feeling very overwhelmed is common in the beginning. Too many questions and various treatment options with a lack of guaranteed outcomes. Hang in there though,...this confusing time usually passes.

Even though you don't have a diagnosis it sounds like your doctor is considering IC. Often that firm IC diagnosis takes a while to get to since they need to rule out other possibilities first.

I'm glad you're trying the diet. That one change made a dramatic difference for me. Not that diet is the only trigger, but for me at least, I know it was a major contributing factor for my ongoing symptoms.

Answering your question is difficult. I'm guessing the typical time it takes to get IC under control varies widely from one person to the next. Some find their right treatment (or combination of) right out the gate, while others have to experiment with this & that. Identifying triggers can take time. I was one of the lucky ones who began to find relief within weeks of diagnosis and my symptoms continued to improve from there. After about eight months I was almost a normal person again.

So, though I can't answer your question with a definitive time for finding relief, I will say never give up your dreams & goals. Just consider them on hold for the moment. Because most of us do get to better days following diagnosis & treatment, and odds are good that you'll be one of them!

Thank you VickiB. It makes a lot of sense that relief comes at different times for different people. Common sense- but it didn't even cross my mind!
I have noticed a difference with the diet as well, though it has been hard giving up so much. Thanks for offering hope while I adjust to this!
