  • Seriously?? From one tomatoe!?!?!

I had a blt for dinner the other night. Woke up about midnight to go to bathroom and couldn't sleep again due to horrible urgency and discomfort. Couldn't get calmed down until 4:30 am! Even did an instill. Seriously, can one tomato cause this? I used to eat them?!?!

I would say probably. And it may be that some days you can eat a tomato and experience no symptoms and other days you will. If I drink 1-2 oz. of pineapple juice, I have symptoms. Some days if I eat a little tomato sauce on pasta I get symptoms, but other days I can eat it with none. Hubby and I think it may have to do with what else and how much I've had to eat and drink earlier in the day. Keep in mind that the preservatives in bacon, combined with the tomato and the vinegar in mayonnaise, plus whatever else you had to eat and drink that day and if you were under any stress are all factors. It may not have been the "one" tomato, but a lot of small things combined together that caused the problem. Make a diary of what you eat on a day when you get symptoms and you may notice a common thing; or you may find that you are eating/drinking a little bit of a lot of food triggers. Good luck !

Even a very small amount of a trigger food or drink can cause a flare.

It could also have been from nitrites or other preservative in the bacon
Diagnosed Nov 2012 after birth of my daughter. I feel like IVF hormone injections triggered my debilitating IC symptoms, but that I had it mildly even before that and didn't realize it.

Currently taking daily: probiotics, licorice root, vitex, vitaminB12, thyraxis, D3, Calcium/Magnesium, permeability factors, digestive enzymes. Nightly castor oil packs on my abdomen. I follow the IC diet, anti-inflammatory diet, gluten and dairy-free (most of the time), with as much organic, local food as possible.

My approach is to try to get to the root of the problem, which according to everything I've read, is probably centered in the gut (read, chronic constipation my whole adult life). I have a list of things to try and keep checking things off my list. My inspiration has been Wendy Cohan's Better Bladder Book.
