Does anyone have sever kidney pain with their IC?

  • #2
Did you get checked for kidney stones?
I have PFD and I have a lot of sharp pain in my lower abdomen... but if you feel like its your kidneys that hurt, I would look into that just in case.

I have been checked for kidney stones, and don't have any. My latest flare was triggered by a pretty bad kidney infection though. The infection is gone, but every time I have a flare that is one of my top complaints. I just wondered if anyone else has this problem. My little brother has IC and has a lot of kidney pain also, so maybe we are just messed up. What is PFD? And can you tell me what instillations are. I have seen them mentioned, but I don't know what they are. Thanks

PFD (Pelvic Floor Dysfunction), I wasnt diagnosed with IC... so im in a slight different boat then you. I get a lot of abdominal pain.. but its all side effects of my PFD.
But kidneys are a different area... I wish I could be more helpful, but I would go to the doctor and try to find out exactly why your in pain there.

I havnt had instillations... so I dont want to give false information!
I would go to the treatment section (Treatments For Moderate Interstitial Cystitis IC/PBS) and see what people say under there, or post a question about them there, your more likely to get good answers!!

I hope you feel better soon.

Hi, Cassidy ~ When you say kidney pain, do you mean in your back? I have many times had a pain in my right side, back when my symptoms flare. My PA ordered an ultrasound which did not show any abnormalty so we're thinking it's just part of the IC mystery.

The important thing is that you discuss this with your doctor again to rule out any kidney problems again this time.

Instillations are combinations of medications (depending what your doctor recommends) that are instilled into the bladder through the urethra with the hopes that it will calm/soothe the bladder or as some may say "temporarily repairing the GAG layer".

Sure hope you find relief soon.

          Blessings,

I get kidney pain with my flares. Worse on the right hand side than the left. I also get general back pain. When my kidney hurts, it feels like someone punched me in that spot and I feel all bruised and tender. Certain movements make it worse.

For me, though, I've had several kidney infections and have some scarring in my kidneys, so my dr. does a kidney ultrasound every year.

In reading the boards, I've also seen others who complain of kidney pain. Heat does wonders for mine - heating pad and hot baths are my best friends.

Hang in there and let us know if you have more questions.

              Re: kidney pain

Omigod KathiB, I know exactly how you feel!

I have IC and I woke up yesterday with horrible lower-back pain (which I usually get during flares but never this bad or suddenly), accompanied by pain in my right flank and, like you say, a feel like I'd been punched in the right kidney-all swollen and tender.

These are not typical symptoms for me and I'm quite worried, but maybe it's all part of the IC bundle? eek!

Hi, Laurita.s ~ My first thought is that you may have a kidney infection and should really have that checked out, especially since your usual symptoms aren't this severe.

I still have the pain in my right side every so often and it definitely feels like kidney but I've had it checked and always negative.

Please give your doc a call....at least if it's negative you can rest a little in that area. Do hope you start feeling better and have a nice week.

                  Re: kidney pain

I agree with Ginger --- any "change" or worsening of symptoms warrants a call to your urologist.

                    Re: kidney pain

                    Thanks for the tips guys

I called my urologist and they told me that they couldn't see me until May (ummm...what if I have an infection??) BUT they did tell me that it'd go 'faster' (whatever that means) if I call my GP first, so I did and I'm seeing her tomorrow morning-hopefully she helps! She doesn't know a tonne about IC (but agrees it exists and all that) but is very nice. The wait times in Canada are bonkers, oy vey!

                      Re: kidney pain

I'm new here, but just wanted to chime in as I get back, left kidney pain with other IC symptoms. In fact, I have been complaining about what I now know to be my intermittent kidney pain for the last 2 years. I am in a major IC flare right now (as I've recently learned), and my kidney pain has been exacerbated. My neuro-uro ordered an ultra-sound of my kidneys just to be sure there were no stones etc. She told me that many of her patients also complain of this kind of pain with an IC flare. So, you are not crazy or abnormal.

I always get back pain near the kidneys when I am in pain. But the rule out the kidneys are fine it's just flare up you might wanna talk to your uro like Donna said. It best get checked out. Sending blessings your way.🙏
