  • Possible UTI or Flare

I've had 11 wonderful pain free days, but as of this morning I feel like I have a UTI, pain in my back, burning after urination. I called my new doctor ( i've only seen him once) I left a message with the nurse regarding symptoms and what I needed to do, it took them 6 hours to call and say they've called an antibiotic in. Now why would I take an antibiotic when my urine hasn't been tested? In the beginning of my IC this is how I felt and all urine samples where normal.

Would any of you take an antibiotic without your urine being tested?
    IC diagnosis 3 weeks ago.

I would not. I generally just go to the clinics at Walgreens or CVS if I cannot get in to see my doctor. My doctor is like yours... he will call in antibiotics for anything. I feel like I take enough medicines as it is, I don't want to take unnecessary ones! I know Walgreens also sells over-the-counter UTI test kits.
    Symtoms started July 2010.
    Severe pelvic floor pain only.

    2 time PT graduate!
In medical remission since August 2011; able to eat and drink anything I want currently.

    IC meds:
200 mg Elmiron in the morning
    100 mg Elmiron @ night
    Macrobid after intercourse

    03/11 07/11 01/12
If at first you don't succeed: 07/26/2013!

Also maybe start looking for a new urologist whose staff gets back to you in a reasonable amount of time, & a urologist who will do a UA & culture to see if your symptoms are a flare or true bladder infection.

Important: If the urine culture is positive, the lab will determine what bacteria is there & what antibiotic is best for that type of bacteria. Can you see your gynecologist or family dr. in the mean time to do the culture? Good luck.

That's exactly how I feel, I'm on 8 meds as it is and I don't want another one unless is necessary

You could go to an urgent care center and ask for testing if you don't think it's infection. Or you could pick up a home UTI test kit and check to see if there's infection there. It's not a good idea to avoid the antibiotics if there's infection there --- it can worsen in a very short time.
