  • Strange side effects from Preleif and baking soda!

    Hello Friends,

I am new here and have been experimenting with taking baking soda, and just today Prelief. They both are amazingly effective at stopping the bladder symptoms I struggle so much with right now (urgency, frequency, general misery!), but have had strange and disconcerting side effects. I actually went to the ER last week after taking baking soda, because my chest became very tight and heavy feeling, as well as my head and I felt a bit tingly/buzzy and my legs felt a little weak. I couldn't sleep--it was too strange and scary. They tested my vitals and heart at the ER and said I was fine. They did not do blood work or look at my urine.

And today, for the first time I tried Prelief. It was a dream come true for my bladder symptoms (I took 2 of them before a meal) but it has EXACTLY the same set of symptoms--within 20 minutes I had no bladder problems, but I had that all those other EXACT symptoms.

Anyone else? I know this is really weird. I will talk to my doctor before I take anymore prelief, and perhaps ask for some bloodwork, etc. if I do test it out again. I would so desperately like to take it, because it works so well, but I don't want to mess up my whole system, or worse.

    Thoughts?

Thank you so much--I appreciate this place and your generosity deeply.
    M,

PS I am on a very strict version of the IC diet right now but find I seem to be annoyed by everything I eat and even water.

It sounds to me like you are having some sort of allergic reaction to an ingredient in the Prelief and the baking soda. Stop taking them immediately until you figure this out. Look at the ingredients of each and see if there is a common ingredient you could be allergic to. I know I was allergic to Prelief (broke out in a rash) but I can take baking soda without any problem. Your symptoms sound scary and could be a serious allergic reaction. Have you ever had any other allergic reactions to any foods or medications? Maybe you could find a pure baking soda to try without any added ingredient, but even then I would try only a very small amount at first.

Since both of these helped your bladder, maybe you can figure out something similar to take that will help without causing the other symptoms. Have you tried high PH water like Essentia? How about some of the other supplements like Aloe (but I was allergic to that also).

Soda is extremely high in salt content. I agree that it's something that needs to be discussed with a physician before taking it. You could also take a Prelief container with you to your doctor appointment and ask about that. How much soda did you take?

Hi, and thanks so much for responding everyone.

I tried the baking soda a couple times, as the doctor and the ER assured me that "it couldn't be the baking soda." This reaction seemed to happen at one-eight of a teaspoon, even thought he first time I took a whole teaspoon. The effect wasn't much different.

I was very surprised that prelief effected me the same way. I thought about an allergy, but also that perhaps I might be very sensitive to the switch over to a high alkiline state somehow.....

The baking soda I took was pure, nothing added.

I don't have high blood pressure and no problems with salt.

Boo Hoo! Here I am in the middle of the night, unable to sleep (again) and sad that perhaps prelief is also out for me...

Haze--did you go to the doctor when you had that reaction? What did they say?

Oh, and also I have never had a serious reaction to a medication or food like this before. I am senstive to things, but not like this.

I have discussed the baking soda issue with 2 doctors (the ER and mine) and they both just can't believe it....what I feel like is I need blood work done to determine if it is really messing me up (I am thinking, is there a mild form of "alkolosis"?), but then I'd have to take it again to do that, and perhaps that isn't so wise.

Maybe your electrolytes are unbalanced. Have you possibly made your system too alkaline?

Yes, I wonder that as well. I wonder if that is something that would show up on blood work?

Also, does anyone feel like there is a backlash or rebound effect from baking soda, prelief, or even pyridium? When they wear off, do you think the symptoms come back worse? I would like to think symptom relief gives the bladder a needed break, but I certainly hope that these things don't make things worse. After a another sleepless night, I worry.

I'm pretty sure they can test your potassium, sodium levels, etc. from blood work. Baking soda did not help me that much when my IC was active and if I took it too soon before or after eating I would get indigestion and stomach cramps. It may have been that it decreased my stomach acids so much that I wasn't able to digest food properly. I was ok with prelief though.

I'm also in Australia, and I got the Prelief from iherb.com
It helps somewhat with frequent urination. But if I take more than one tablet, my eyes get irritated the next day.

Regarding the initial complaint from frenchbeach, I have similar symptoms with most herbs and supplements which thicken the blood. My heart starts to pump heavily, trying to push the thickened blood to my brain, but does not fully succeed, so I'm a bit dizzy.

The solution is easy. Many other herbs and supplements have the opposite effect. They are thinning the blood. For example, Gingko Biloba comes to mind (blood thinning is just a side effect).

Re: Strange side effects from Preleif and baking soda!

I get heart palpations of baking soda water as well, I used to take 0,5 tea spoons in water. I have not got dizzy though, or maybe I do not know that, as I take it before sleep usually. But only awful thing is, that after drinking baking soda water almost 2 years, and far too often, I have started getting very bad stomach pain afterwards. Last time was so awful, I had to take very high doses Pantoprazol (stomach medicine) to get better. I mean, baking soda has been my life saver in bad days, but now I am so sad as it looks like I overdid it. So, yes, you can get heart palpations, but it is not hurting you, as I have got it as well, but eventually can hurt your stomach. Just use it very carefully!!

Please talk with your doctor about any strange symptoms brought on by soda or any other home remedy. For example, if you have a blood pressure problem, you may not be able to tolerate soda.
