  • Penecillin 4x a day for 10 days - anyone been here?

I came down with strep and did 10 days on Amoxicillin and it went ok. Well it brought my IC back but I went on a very strict diet and I'm still on it but I know I'll get back to Remission again eventually. So I survived!! I had some pain and frequency and one night I slept with hot water bottle and had to do some internal PT on my pelvic floor but overall it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I took my probiotics twice or even 3x a day (VSL#3) and ate yoghurt and kefir daily.

Only problem is - it didn't totally get rid of my Strep throat. And I've been feeling really run down, sick, and the sore throat has been going on for over a month - and so I went to Urgent Care and I tested positive for Strep again. Woof. Now they want to me to go on another, stronger antibiotic for 10 more days and pump and dump.

However, I reached out to my uncle who is a Dr and he says i should just take Penicillin for 10 days - 4x a day and keep breastfeeding. Anyone have any experience here taking Penicillin 4x a day? I imagine its going to wreak havoc on my IC but i'm not sure i have a choice. It's been over a month of weird throat stuff and feeling worn out and I know that the complications from untreated Strep are serious.

What a world we are living in! On a positive note, I'm trying to use this as an opportunity to return to mindfulness, meditation, and being present and not catastrophizing (sp?) about future pain and future trouble... Reading "Things Fall Apart" is helping...

You are in a really tough spot right now. Do you know what the stronger antibiotic is? I am allergic to penicillin so I always have to have a different antibiotic. I haven't had a strep for many years, but have taken antibiotics for other things with no problem with my IC. It could be that the antibiotic being recommended wouldn't cause a continued flare; there's no way of knowing without trying it.

I hope you feel better quickly and the strep will be gone for good.

    Sending well wishes,
    Donna

Thanks for your reply Donna. I always appreciate your responses. The other antibiotic is Cefdinir. Any experience here? I don't know what to do. I'm inclined to try Penecillin first because it seems less dangerous but I have no idea what 4x a day is going to do to me. I wonder if taking Cefdinil 2x a day for 10 days would be easier. I have no idea.
