  • Pain Management during Pregnancy

    Hi,

Recently, two physicians said that Percocet is safe in limited quantities during the first and second trimesters of pregnancy, but not in the third because of impending labor.

What has anyone heard about being able to manage IC pain during pregnancy?

My husband and I want to start trying to have a child next May or June 2008 when we get settled into our new home where ever the Air Force decides to send us. I am on Depo-Provera right now and was considering getting off it after my January dosage next year so it can have time to wear off (it takes a little longer to do so than birth control pills), my periods can come back (b/c I don't have them now) and such.

I am on other medications for things related to IC such as the antidepressant Wellbutrin and some sleep meds that I know I will have to get off. It's just that now, I am in so much pain because of IC and I wanted to hear from some ICer's firsthand who have been through pregnancy and how you handled your pain.

Thoughts on the meds or pain management during pregnancy, please?

    April

Diagnosed in 2007, but had IC symptoms since 2002. My current regimen includes: home instillations of Marcaine, Heparin and Solu-Medrol plus vaginal valium suppositories nightly. I also use Tramadol for pain as needed.

I am with you completely hun....
I too am trying to conceive....but I am doing it now. I was on Loestrin FE and stopped in December to start....I know Depo takes alot longer to get out of your system. I have heard up to a year.....check on that. I am totally in pain a lot since I stopped taking BC. And I had to stop taking Neurontin too. I had a flare up yesterday due to my period. Good luck to you.

They say that most woman go into remission when pregnant....i sure that happens for us.

    Diagnosed with IC 3-30-2003

Flare ups 1 time a month lasts for days.

Good Luck with conceiving. What is BC that you had to stop? Was that pain medication? Also, what are you doing NOW for pain mgmt. since trying to conceive?

        April,
Percocet is safe to use in limited quanities during pregnancy and the meds used are usually based on the the preference of the doc. I worked on Mother Baby about 6 years ago. One of the biggest med groups that are contraindicated in pregnancy are benzos because they are know to cause birith defects(especially limb)in the growing baby. Those include meds like Valuim, Klonopin, Arivan, Versed, Xanax....Of course your doc is your best resource. The other meds that I know are usually out the door are the antiseizures and tricyclic antidepressants.

        Hugs,
        Barb

          Hey Barb,

I appreciate your expertise on these matters. It's not that Aaron and I are trying right now or anything, I just want to be able to know what we're looking at facing. Here's a current list of my meds and I know even though you're not a doctor, I was wondering about them. Of course, we will consult a doctor when we decide to try to conceive, but maybe you can tell me what we're looking at facing.

I know I have to get off Methadone, Valium and probably Ambien, but I am not sure about others. What is your opinion? I am only asking for opinion because I realize we have to talk to my OB/GYN when we decide to do this. Thanks again for your thoughts.

          1. Synthroid, 112mcg, QD
          2. Docusate Calcium, 240mg, BID
          3. Calcium Carbonate 500mg/200IU
          4. Senekot-S, PRN as needed, up to two tabs per day
          5. Claritin, 10mg, QD
          6. Protonix, 40mg, QD
          7. Methadone, 10mg, BID
          8. Percocet 7.5/325 one to two times per day PRN
          9. Valium, 5mg, PRN, BID-TID
          10. Phenergan, 25-50mg, q4-6h
          11. Ambien, 10mg, PRN, qhs
          12. Wellbutrin SR 300mg qd
