  • Considering Pregnancy but doctors are discouraging it

I have NEVER wanted kids until recently. I realized that my husband and I would be good at it and that I just want 1 baby. Well I went off the pill and have been dealing with horrible shooting pains in the same area where my Endometriosis was removed Dec 09 and heavy spotting on and off for 3 weeks. Doctors are doing nothing for the pain other then an anti-inflammatory (Mobic) which isnt helping. So my question is how do those of you with IC (and Endometriosis) deal with pain while trying to get pregnant? We arent going to officially start trying until December when I am finally off all meds and turn off my InterStim. I appreciate any help or words of wisdom even if it is someone telling me to forget trying to have a baby.

Diagnosed with Endometriosis December 7, 2009 (12/7 is not my lucky day )

    Medications that have worked:
    Atarax 50 mg daily
    Flexeril 10mg as needed
    Valium 10 mg as needed
Elmiron 100mg 3x week in bladder instill solution
Pyridium (can’t remember dosage) as needed

    Treatments that have worked:
4 Pudendal nerve blocks once every 4-6 months
    InterStim implanted August 10 2010
    Pelvic Floor therapy

    Medications that haven’t worked:
Elmiron, tried it orally for a year with zero improvement
Elavil, I gained 20 lbs, constantly in a mind fog, drowsy. tried it for 6 months and had enough
    Ditropan
    Celebrex (for menstrual pain)
    Doxepin (for sleep)
    Nortriptyline
    Mobic
and there are a few others but I can’t remember them

    Treatments that didn’t work:
Hydrodistention landed me in the hospital for 3 days, couldn’t void at all and had SEVERE pain. Sent home with a foley for 4 more days along with pain meds until I could finally void.

I think that only you know for sure what's right for you, your relationship, your health and your life. My advice would be this:

Endometriosis is known for coming back, sometimes with a vengeance. So if you've been on birth control for awhile and kept it at bay, and suddenly are going off of it, consider hormone therapy that will help take the place of birth control without actually preventing you from being pregnant. If the symptoms of endometriosis are too much to handle, perhaps now isn't the time to have a baby. Listen to your body - pain is its way of telling you that something isn't right. On another note, I've heard many stories of women who, upon becoming pregnant, experience complete remission.

Again, I think it's important for you to think things through and not rush anything - as you know, our I.C. and Endometriosis-affected bodies are much more sensitive than those without these terrible diseases. I wish you luck!

wow I cant believe that your dr's are discouraging you from having a baby (unless it would be life threatining). but it doesnt seem like it is. I would just go for it and find a doctor who will be able to assist you ....not discourage you. Im TTC right now and the good thing is that you may go into remission while pregnant
Diagnosed with IC October 2009- through bladder biopsy (no glomerations or hunners ulcers found, just irritation)

      I have moderate-severe IC

Currently stopped taking all medications due to pregnancy

Pregnancy would not be life threatening for me. Just met with one of my two uro/gynos and he is going to do a laparoscopy (for the Endo), cystoscopy and a pudendal nerve block on Nov 15th. Would be sooner but insurance is being slow plus my husband will be out of town. I also discovered on a recent ultrasound I have a few follicular cysts on my right ovary. 1 of the cysts is almost as big as my ovary. I have had this issue for years but only now my base family doctor (husband is Active Duty) mentioned the possibility of PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome). Its frustrating because i have to go through 3-4 doctors to deal with all this when I used to only have 1!. So now the game plan is after I am healed from surgery we are going to start trying. I am off all my meds and on only B class meds and hating life. mainly from the pain caused by the Endo. My uro/gynos refuse to do instills during pregnancy because they said its unsafe but I think they are just scared of a law suit because im their only patient in child bearing age. Plus they will only do my instills 3 times a week every couple months and they make me wait at the doctors office for 30 minutes because they have never heard of someone putting Elmiron in the instill until me. Im used to doing instills 3 times a week every week for the last 2 years.

so now my question is, how did OB's handle your pregnancy with the IC? do you recommend natural childbirth or c-section?

I appreciate the replys, sorry for the late response. I didnt realize I had replies.

My IC was in remission throughout pregnancy and for 8 years after. I have been told that the hormonal and immune system changes were favorable for my IC. I wish you the best!
