  • IC and Pregnancy

I was wondering if you guys had some info. on meds. and treatments that are safe to use while trying to get pregnant and during pregnancy? How effective are they? I'm 30 and childless and am really wanting to try to get pregnant, again. I'm hoping by summer that I might be feeling fair enough to try, but I'm really scared of discontinuing the meds I'm on.(Elmiron, Elavil, DMSO instillations) I'm just scared of the pain getting any worse. I'm not just scared, I'm terrified. I feel so sorry for my hubby. He has been so patient and supportive throughout infertility treatments and now, IC. I know he really wants to be a Dad, it's written all over his face. He's so good with little ones, too. Just the other day he asked me what I thought about being a foster parent. Anyway, I was just wondering if you guys might could provide some info. on meds. and or treatments that might be helpful. I haven't talked to a Dr. about this yet. I'm sure I will but I'd like to hear from some of you who've actually experienced pregnancy with IC.
    Thanks,
    Melissa

    Hi Melissa,

At this point there are no IC treatments proven completely safe for pregnancy and your doctor may suggest discontinuing them if you can. Some meds, like Elmiron, just haven't been researched enough in pregnancy to say for sure. When my hubby and I decided to 'try' 3 years ago, I was terrified of stopping my meds too. I talked with both my uro and my OB about it and then decided to do a med-free trial period to see how well I would do. I did much better than I ever thought I would! What it boils down to is discussing each medication with your doctor and weighing all the benefits and risks. I wish you lots of luck!!
