  • URGENT--NEED ADVICE NOW!

I am now in my 39th week and might be facing a C-section...PLEASE, has any ICer had one out there, and if so, how did it effect you? does the catheter stay in all night? how was your recovery? thanks, Beth

I have had two c-sections, but they were both pre-IC. They weren't as bad as I thought they would be. The anesthetic (epidural and spinal) worked and all I felt was some tugging. The recovery is a bit rough, but not unbearable for me. You are sore for some time and coughing or laughing hurts the first few days. wink But the little baby in your arms is a GREAT distraction!!!! baby

    Diagnosed August 2001

Current IC meds: Elmiron (since 2001), Levaquin (one pill after intercourse to prevent UTIs), Effexor (for depression & anxiety)

Past IC meds: Amitriptyline (Elavil), Hydroxyzine (Vistaril), Detrol LA, Lexapro (for depression & anxiety, but also helped my IC) (They all helped, but I was able to discontinue them.)

I've been virtually symptom free and able to eat & drink whatever I'd like for about 8 years now.

Oh yeah, the catheter. Mine was in at least 24 hours, can't remember if it was longer...

I had a catheter in for seven days after my c-section last year. After I used the bathroom a few times it was better. My IC stayed under control until April. (Section was in JAN.)

The recovery is hard though. But with family and friends helping you you'll forget it in no time. I thought people were crazy when they gave me that advice, but it was true for me.

Try hard not to worry about it. (It's hard, I know.) But so well worth it. If I could I'd do it two more times. wink

Take care and let us know when the big event happened! kissing

OMGosh. Why did you have the catheter for so long? Were you having problems emptying your bladder? My "What to Expect" book says 24 hours is typical, but God knows nothing with IC is typical. LOL

You may want to ask if a pediatric catheter would work better for you. They're smaller and often more pliable.

              Kim,
I had toxemia. Which led to pulmonary edema and that developed pregnancy induced cardio myopathy. I wasn't able to move at all. I didn't even get to see Zane for 6 days after his birth. For him to be born 2 months early, he was in better health than his momma.

Not to scare any new moms or soon-to-be's. My case was rare.....And of course with my luck I had to get it. But I was lucky. I took care of myself when I finally got to come home and had round the clock care for Zane for two months. (I almost started feeling like I was his aunt or something.)

Anyway Beth you'll have great doctors and your family will be there and you'll do great no matter what the procedure... kissing

You will do just fine. I had toxemia with only one of my 3 pregnancies, and it occurred because the doctor did not believe I was swelling or in trouble, since my legs were not swollen. (This occurred in a small town, and we were new in town.) It was during my 2nd pregnancy, and the doctor was also not overly attuned to bladder problems during a high risk pregnancy. I delivered 3 healthy children, with IC and diabetes combined on the last two.

I also have had 2 c sections both with total sedated, my cath. was in place less then 12 hours both times. I am planning another baby which most likely will be c section, after hours of natural labor, c section is the only way to go. The cat. was the easy part of the whole thing.

                    Congratulations Beth,
It is coming so fast and such an exciting time for you. I had a c-section in August and have a beautiful baby boy who will be 7 months Friday. My catheter was in for less than 12 hours also and they put it in after I had my epidural. Anyways...there was so much going on with him being my first baby and after having the c-section, the morphine drip, a brand new baby, and all the excitement of becoming a mommy I don't even remember having any problems with IC or the catheter (and I definitely have had problems with the cath. in the past with DMSO instillations).
Hope this ends up being the same for you.
                    Keep us posted and again..congratulations.
                    hugs..

Do the hokey pokey and you turn yourself around..that's what it's all about..whoooo!
While we have the gift of life,
it seems to me the only tragedy
is to allow part of us to die --
                    whether it is our spirit,
                    our creativity,
                    or our glorious uniqueness.
