• Pelvic Inflammatory Disease causing IC?

I am 32 and was just diagnosed with low grade Pelvic Inflammatory disease. I had some abdominal pain and vaginal, urethral burning that alerted me to be checked by a OBGYN. Thankfully, I only have some slight scarring of my left ovary and tube-so I don't tnink it will affect my fertility. I'd really like to have a baby soon with my husband. So they are going to try to flush my tubes with antibiotics. Then I go on a big dose of antibiotics.

My gynocologist believes the bacteria from my PID could have migrated to the bladder causing cystitis.

I am wondering whether or not this is connected to my IC. I have a lot of bladder pressure and frequency 24/7 for 1.5 years now and was diagnosed via a Hydrodistention. Why has no urologist ever suspected that I had PID ? Has any one of you ever heard of this connection???

mimmy,

PID is an infection, it can be of the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix - anything vaginally related or organs. Most often, its the uterus that is infected, and it can spread to the tubes as you mentioned. PID can cause infection to go into your bladder, causing either a bladder infection or a UTI - but check with your gyno and uro and have the infection cleared up before anything else. Your stomach is probably very tender, sore and bloated - I've been through a PID before but due to actually just the opposite - mine migrated from bladder/UTI's (chronic all my life) into the vaginal area causing a PID many many years before my dx of IC.

I do not know if PID can cause IC - it can cause alot of symptoms similar, but since you've been dx'ed with IC - I'd say you are being whammied by your body right now with the infection in combination with IC. I'm not a doctor, and its just my opinion and me speaking from personal experience, but try to drink plenty of clear fluids and do the antibiotics. As far as fertility goes - I think you'll be okay so long as you dont have recurring PIDs. I tried for 7 years to have our second child (fertility pills, everything) and couldnt get pregnant, but then 8 months after being dxed with IC - God decided He had other plans and gave me my son . So keep the faith and dont worry too much...Good luck with trying to get pregnant, children are wonderful gifts from above.

Hugs,

Deb

Hi Mimmy:

So your gyno now thinks that maybe it's been PID all along (for the last year and a half) instead of or in addition to your "IC?" Just curious. I don't blame you for being angry at your doctors for not finding this sooner. I'm sure that things will get much better for you now that this is finally being treated adequately. Best of luck!

Take care,
Lynne

I found this post very interesting because I think I actually had my first bout of IC 10 years ago and that is what they diagnosed me with.... pelvic inflamitory disease even though they couldnt pinpoint a bacteria. Just found it to be very interesting. I hope that you and your hubby have no problems concieving. If i did have pid, which I now doubt, I still had 4 kids afterwords. Good luck to you.
