  • IC and Pregnancy

    Hello all,

I just found out I was pregnant on Sunday so I immediately stopped all my meds I have been having cramping in my central lower abdomen so I am unsure if this is a sign of my symptoms coming back or if it's the beginning stages of my pregnancy (5 weeks). Any feedback from IC moms and how their pregnancy went would be greatly appreciated. I am super happy but also so nervous

I encourage you to see your ob doctor very soon if you haven't already. It may be that you won't need to stop ALL of your meds to protect your baby.

    Warm hugs,
    Donna

      Re: IC and Pregnancy

I asked my Uro and she told me to stop everything but the elmiron but to me there isn't enough information about it and being pregnant I don't want to take a chance. They also stopped my pelvic PT because there isn't much she can do for me while pregnant I guess. My first appointment with my OB isn't until I am 8.5 weeks.

        Re: IC and Pregnancy

Congratulations!! I hope it all works out wonderfully! Don't worry too much; many patients have reduction of symptoms during pregnancy. I was one of them, it was wonderful.
        DX IC (cystoscopy) 7/93
Meds did little-nothing, but Paxil (98) calmed it down. (No longer on an SSRI; hate meds)
IC went to "barely noticeable" status for years. (I put it on 'ignore')
MAJOR flare 7/13 along with 2 injuries, especially the first, labral tear, right hip.
Unable to urinate hardly at all with undiagnosed muscle tears (10) & labral tear Fall/Winter 13/14.
Surgery successful for muscle and hip repair, 4/14. Researching the connection between hip injuries and pelvic/bladder painhttp://www.hss.edu/hip-pain-center-f...-questions.asp as well as muscle tears: http://vincerainstitute.com/core-inj...sports-hernia/ (just some helpful links)

          Re: IC and Pregnancy

          Hello,
I have always referred to these forums for help and information and have finally gotten the nerve to ask a question. I was diagnosed with IC in 2006, have tried many medications, diet, pelvic floor therapy with fair but not great results. My husband and I are now thinking about starting a family and I am nervous about pregnancy and IC. Could anyone tell me what meds if any they took during pregnancy, how soon they started meds up if they stopped them during pregnancy and lastly...childbirth, vaginal or c-section. Also any information on with your IC was like during pregnancy. I greatly appreciate all that you can share with me and I'm thankful for the community of kindred spirits when it comes to life and IC.

          thanks

            Re: IC and Pregnancy

@Tcolan13 I can tell you thus far how things are going for me but I am only 11 weeks pregnant. My OB had me stop everything that I was on down to my allergy medicine. I am so far having a really hard time I get up 4 times a night to pee, I have chronic pelvic pain, my allergies are kicking my a$$ but my urologist says it could all change in my 2nd and 3rd trimester which I am holding on to hope for. I also suffer from osteoarthritis and 2 herniated discs in my mid and low back so I can see that flaring in my 3rd trimester. I am trying to enjoy this pregnancy as it is my first and it's all suppose to be exciting but I have already had 2 pelvic exams and 2 internal ultrasounds and that puts me out for like 24-36 hrs in pain (which there is no relief for) No meds, no hot baths, no heating pads on belly etc. I am still happy to be pregnant and every time I see/hear the baby it makes it all worth it but it's been hard so far.

              He Katie
I am currently 6 weeks pregnant and going thru exactly what you are. I've stopped my lyrica, cymbalta, elavil and zanaflex. I'm still on 2 MG of dilaudid 3-4x a day and can't get out of bed for more than an hour at a time. I have every symptom of pregnancy you can think of and many I didn't know existed. At this rate I don't even know if I can handle another 8.5 months of this but I am truly hoping, praying and meditating that things have to get better. My hope is my body is dealing with the hormones and the lack of drugs and I'm hoping over the next week or so things will start to settle down. My uro said women with IC and pelvic pain specifically usually have positive experience with pregnancy immediately and she's concerned that since I'm not feeling good yet it might just be rough the whole time for me...which at this point I can't accept. Seeing as you are a bit further along can you please offer an update on how things are going?? Trying to stay positive has been my biggest challenge as I fear losing this baby and I fear not be able to handle all the pain but reading that others either have dealt or are dealing the same offers comfort that I'm not alone.
Thanks for any guidance you can offer.

@Lboogie852 - so far I haven't had much relief I am amazed your doc allowed you to stay on the dilaudid. They made me stop EVERYTHING! I was on 10mg of Norco a day and had to stop cold turkey (so that you can imagine made everything worse) I saw my uro/gyn a couple weeks ago and she said its the 1/3 rule, 1/3 get better 1/3 stay the same 1/3 get worse and she said it's the same with each trimester you could have a horrible first, amazing second, horrible third it all depends at what point you are at I am 12+ weeks and almost into my second trimester so I will keep in touch and let you know how things go. Please let me know as well how things are for you.

                  Re: IC and Pregnancy

Just today I came across a Poise Products website (Australia and New Zealand) with pelvic floor exercises, including videos, most of which are aimed at pregnant women. In fact there are pregnant women in the videos.

                    Re: IC and Pregnancy

I think stopping Lyrica would cause a bit of withdrawal symptoms, it is remarkably similar to gabapentin, which is known to cause a period of those type of symptoms. Cymbalta also causes discontinuation syndromes, this may just be normal as per the meds and not to do with the pregnancy, hopefully. Weird for your doctor to measure you by other women, as this disease varies so much from person to person. Hopefully it is the meds. I hope you feel better.

Sorry, I'm so prone to withdrawals with anything I've taken ever that I have ended up learning the hard way, but thought it may help to know that those drugs are both (not sure about the others) known to cause symptoms upon stopping. What about the dilaudid? What will they do about that?
